iPhone: OnTime is a pretty neat app that tracks your current location and uses it to estimate the travel time necessary to get to your next appointment. Knowing this, it’ll alert you when you should leave to ensure you’re not late.
.via_bubble {width: 210px; border: none; -moz-border-radius: 5px; -webkit-border-radius: 5px; border-radius: 4px; background: rgb(70,70,70); color: rgb(229,232,217); text-align: left; padding: 12px; margin: 12px 0 12px 0;} .via_bubble a {color: white;} .via_bubble img {border: none;}
Say, for example, you’re at home at 11:00 AM and you have a job interview at 1:00 PM across town. You know it’ll take you about 30 minutes to get there, but at 12:00 PM a friend calls you for help. Your location changes, and so does your travel time. Rather than alerting you 30 minutes before like a normal alarm, OnTime takes your current location into account and will alert you when you actually need to leave to get there on time. So, if your friend lived 5 minutes further away, you’d be notified to leave a little earlier than if you were at home.
This is a smart little app that could help a lot of perpetually late people actually show up on time, or just anyone who can’t anticipate the whims of traffic and road construction (meaning all of Los Angeles, of course). OnTime is $2.49 and is available right now in the iTunes App Store. A BlackBerry version is currently in the works. It’s on sale in the Australian iTunes store, but how well it works for directions here is an open question — if you have given it a try, tell us if it’s worth it in the comments.
