Good Free Family Games For Android

Are the kids clamouring for a turn on the shiny new Android device you got for Christmas? Here's a brief selection of good free games you can install to keep them entertained. (And no, Angry Birds is not included — we figure you've heard of that.)

To avoid my own non-youthful biases interfering too much, this list was compiled by my eight year old honorary nephew Jack, who cross-tested them on both an Android handset and the Optus MyTab (some games don't work so well on the larger format devices). All can be easily found in the Android market. (Some also have paid versions, but the ad-supported or demo releases are still good.)

  • Abduction & Abduction 2. Cows abducted by aliens. What is there not to like?
  • Super Froggy. A nifty Frogger clone. Don't let the amphibians get squashed!
  • My Paper Plane & My Paper Plane 2. Tilt control your paper plane through the skies.
  • WordUp. Find words (and improve your spelling) before the timer runs out.
  • Glutton Ice Cream. Tilt your phone and catch ice cream. Woo-hoo!

Got your own recommendations for good free Android games for the family to add to this list for holiday fun? We're all ears in the comments. Thanks Jack!
