If you feel like your regular old calendar has put a chokehold on your day, Coolendar offers an alternate take on calendars, turning the matrix-style calendar into a more simplified list.
Actually, Coolendar is a little more like a to-do list than a calendar — only the to-do items are all focused around a date. You add items to Coolendar using plain language, and it's pretty good at arranging everything for you from that point on. (I know it calls itself a calendar, but it really is pretty similar to the way Remember the Milk does tasks by dates and plain language.)
Coolendar may not be a great fit if you're a really heavy calendar user, but if you're looking for a different take on the calendar and you don't mind trying something new, it's an option. Based on the discrepancy between the feature rundown on the front page and what's actually in the app, they're still adding functionality and working out some kinks. (Eventually it looks like it'll let you use #hashtags for organising, @mentions for sharing events (presumably via Twitter), and multiple alert options to make sure you get the reminder.) That said, it's an attractive, nicely designed app with some promise. Coolendar is free to use, requires a Google account to log in.
