Undercover Helps You Recover Your Stolen iOS Devices

iOS: iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads all make for good thief bait. If your iOS device has gone missing, Undercover can help you get it back.

Even if you're getting robbed by this considerate thief, you probably want to try and get your Apple product back. We looked at how Prey can help you track and (hopefully) recover a stolen laptop, but if you've got an iOS device as well you might want to take a look at Undercover.

While you have to have Undercover running on your iOS device for it to transmit a location, what makes it really neat is that you can launch it remotely via the Undercover web site. Basically, you customise a push notification that goes to the phone and when the message is viewed, Undercover is quietly launched and the phone's location is transmitted.

Undercover is available now as a universal iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch app for $6. It makes for a good alternative to the Find My iPhone feature included with MobileMe, as it's a lot cheaper than $US99/year plus it gives you more control over how you find your iOS device should it end up stolen. Undercover is also available for your Mac, but it's kind of pricey at $US50 and Prey is a great free solution.

Tap Trace does something similar, and is free today - as listed in Gizmodo's Free Apps.

Sorry I might be misunderstanding how the app works but as it is a push notification if the thief decides not to view the notification you won't find where your phone is. Is that correct?

I can't seem to find out how many devices it supports. at work, I have over 10 iphones running on a single mobileme account, Purely for the 'find my iphone' and remote wipe features. This would certainly be better value for a single iphone, though.

I'm more than happy to dump mobileme for a more comprehensive/secure solution - bonus points if it integrates with our BES so all our mobiles are covered under a single interface - but I haven't hit the limits of mobileme yet. Does anybody know the limit of iphones you can have reporting at once?

I have undercover for mac for our imac and 2 macbook pro's. It may seem pricey for $50 for a single license but its only $60 for 5 licenses. It made it a no brainer for me, i highly recommend you follow their instructions to setup a guest account and set an EFI password. :)
