Whether you don't have a reliable oven or you're just looking to keep your kitchen a bit cooler, you can actually cook a cake very simply in a bread machine.

Some bread machines actually have a "cake" setting, but if yours doesn't, you can just as easily use the "rapid" setting (make sure it doesn't burn, though). Just pour two tablespoons of oil in the pan and swirl it around to cover the edges. Put together the batter (cake mix is just fine) and pour it into the bread machine pan and push the cake button. When it's done, you'll have a slightly smaller cake than usual, but you can then cut it into layers and ice as usual.
