188,000 iPads Have Been Sold in Australia

Just how many iPads have been sold in Australia since the device's launch in Australia back in May? Market research firm GfK says the answer is around 188,000, but that number could rise significantly over the next year as alternatives appear.

GfK's data, based on a survey of 12,000 Australians, shows that there's still some way to go before tablets are a truly mass-market device, given that the number represents just 1.2 per cent of the population. However, one in eight of the people surveyed said they were considering purchasing a tablet within the next year. That won't necessarily be an iPad, given the emergence of Android alternatives such as the Galaxy Tab.

Don't forget the telstra android tablet.. it's 7" with a dock / stand i believe & a snapdragon chip.. but resistive screen. Only $300 bucks though, so super cheap!

I'd be surprised if it's as low as that, actually - given I've seen perhaps 3 or 4 a day in the hands of fellow commuters, and that's just the carriage I'm travelling in. My train line isn't even through a particularly rich area of Sydney.
