Firefox with Greasemonkey: User script Gmail Labels Icons extends the Gmail label customisation from just colours to icons as well, so you can more easily tell your folders apart with a visual clue.
You'll need to have the Greasemonkey extension installed to take advantage of this script, which didn't work in Google Chrome in our testing, but once you've installed the script you'll be able to choose from the pre-defined set of icons from the label colour picker menu. If you wanted to create your own custom icons, you could edit the script to point to a new set of icons. Gmail Labels Icons is a free download, requires Firefox with Greasemonkey.
