iPhone: If playing a game wins out over crossing items off your to-do list every time, consider EpicWin, a new iPhone app that turns your to-do list into a full-on role-playing game, complete with to-do driven XP and level ups.
We heard a lot of buzz when the EpicWin trailer (above) hit the web, and for good reason: It's hard to argue with something that tries to make getting things done more enjoyable. But how well does it actually work? I suppose that depends on how much gaining XP and levelling up motivates you — and how honest you are with yourself when playing the game of life, as it were. Your own productivity style aside, here's how the app works:
For each new item you add to your to-do list, you categorise it as a feat of strength, stamina, intellect, social (not sure that's a feat) and spirit. Like any good to-do list, you can also set up recurring to-dos. The app assigns the task a level of epicness (which translates to your XP points). When you cross an item off your to-do list, you also gain the accompanying XP points. Making sense? (Oh, and the best way to complete a task involves pressing and holding on a rosette [the badge containing the XP] , which simulates a little battle you win. You can sort of see it in the screenshot, though it didn't turn out all that well.)
If you jump over to the Profile tab, you'll get a look at your current level and overall stats. You can also switch to the Loot tab to view your progress and loot, which appears to automatically advance as you gain experience.
There's not much more to it than that, other than the fact that, like most RPGs, the more you play it, the more fun and loot and goodies you gather. At least in theory.
EpicWin is available for $4 from the iTunes App Store. If you give it an honest go, let's hear how well it seems to aid your ability to get things done in the comments.
