Unrevoked3 Painlessly Roots HTC Android Phones

Windows/Mac/Linux: Lots of folks in the US may have just gotten their Droid Incredibles in the mail, but it wasn’t a moment too soon. The Droid Incredible has already been rooted, and all it takes is a few clicks and a free, cross-platform tool that also works on the HTC Desire.

It doesn’t get much easier than this to root your phone: just download the tool, plug in your device and let it run (Windows users will want to install the included drivers first). It will give you root permissions and install the popular ClockworkMod recovery image, after which you can install backup managers, custom ROMs, and previously blocked apps that allow you to tether, overclock and otherwise do anything you want with your phone.

The best thing about this software is that it’s available on all three desktop platforms, and it works on a number of different HTC Android phones. Hit the link to check it out.

Unrevoked3 is a free download for all platforms, and works on the Sprint EVO 4G, Droid Incredible, HTC Desire, HTC Aria and Droid Eris.

  • After agonizing over the endless wait for Froyo, I took the plunge and used Unrevoked3 on the Mac for on my HTC Desire. Just plugged in the phone and a few minutes later it was done.

I would point out that you also have to download and install the latest gapps and radio zip files, otherwise you get stuck on the boot screen (also known as panic time).

But having done it I have Froyo, plus I installed the Lifehacker-recommended CyanogenMod 6.0.2, and my Android couldn’t be happier. For non-geeks like me, Unrevoked3 is probably as painless as it gets.
