iPad only: Flipboard is a new iPad application that creates a personalised digital magazine based on your interests and on what your friends are doing and reading on Facebook and Twitter. It may not sound like much, but it's actually really compelling.
Check out the video above for a quick overview of Flipboard. As you can see, the free app integrates with your Twitter and Facebook accounts to create personalised, magazine-style reading lists. That by itself is actually pretty impressive in practice. In fact, possibly Flipboard's biggest success is how nicely everything fits and feels in the interface, and how much it actually feels like a magazine in a good way rather than in a "is this a CD-ROM" way.
You can add various sections to your Flipboard front page/table of contents, drill down into sections, flip between pages and get a closer look at any story or image with a tap. If you want to read a full, longer piece, you still have to load the full web page for most stories (it does this in-app), which is sort of unfortunate but makes sense from a financial perspective. (Publishers would freak out if all their content were available in-app without driving ad impressions.)
Unfortunately the Twitter and Facebook integration for new users is currently down while Flipboard upgrades its servers, but you can still try out the other options and get a good sense of how those features might work. Flipboard is a free download for the iPad only.
