Opera 10.6 Beta Speeds Up Even More, Adds HTML5 Capabilities

Windows/Mac/Linux: Opera has updated its early 10.6 browser builds to beta, giving early adopters a taste of many more HTML5 capabilities, supposedly ramping up JavaScript and page load speed further, and adding some helpful default search engines.

Among the nifty new HTML5 features, including "Web Workers" background scripts, support for the Google-pushed free WebM video and audio codec, and geolocation offerings, among others. There's a supposed 50 per cent increase in speed, too, but Opera doesn't make it clear from which version that gain is seen. And, along with the usual bug fixes, Wikipedia and other search engines have been added to the default list of options.

Opera's 10.6 Beta is a free download for Windows, Mac and Linux systems.
