Putting the garbage can under the sink is a great space-saver, but if that area is cramped, using it is a pain. Instead, make your own sliding, auto-opening garbage can to save yourself the space and the hassle.
Over at DIY blog IKEA Hacker, they've featured this great project that turns a simple trash can into a sliding, automatically opening can with just a few materials: a wall shelf, some curtain wire, a knob from a dresser, rail ends and a rail guide. The rail guide and shelf take care of the sliding in and out, while the curtain wire connects the lid with the inside of the cupboard, making the lid pop open as you slide out the shelf. It's a simple, yet very clever hack that is sure to cut down on the four letter words involved with disposing of trash. Hit the link for more details on how it was made.
