Couch surfing — staying in the houses of locals and paying them rather than a hotel — is a popular tactic for cheap travel. Crashpadder.com is the latest entrant into the couch-surfing market, with a nicely-designed site that incorporates reviews, Google Street View imagery and all the usual social networking options.
While the site has an emphasis on UK accommodation, there's a reasonable number of options on offer for Australians as well. As with any option of this type, thorough research is advised: it's trickier to make a complaint about someone's private home than it is with a hotel.
