Even if you're a huge fan of iTunes and the App Store it's extremely annoying — especially on Windows — when you click an App Store link to check something out and your computer grinds to a halt. This simple browser-hack prevents the lag.
Reader Andreasr2d2 was frustrated — like many people! — with App Store links calling up iTunes and lagging his computer. He did a little digging and found a simple solution:
This is a tip for anyone that's annoyed of iTunes links. As everyone knows, iTunes links are quite annoying and auto launch iTunes. For Mac users, it's not much of issue, but on Windows, iTunes is quite a resource hog, let alone taking a couple minutes to fully start up. It's much more pleasant to view iTunes links in the iTunes preview on Apple's website.
So here's how to do it. This is for Chrome, but I'm sure it's easy to do it in other browsers, as well. So you basically want to open a new and then type "about:plugins" into the address bar. Then, you're going to want to scroll through the plugins and find one called "iTunes Application Detector" Hit disable and you should be good to go. To test it out just click on down to this link.
You should view the description of the application and if you want to launch iTunes you can click the blue "View in iTunes" button under the app's icon.
Have a clever iTunes or other nuisance-related hack to share? Let's hear about it in the comments. Thanks Andreasr2d2!
