Windows: Although some versions of Windows have a DOS emulation mode, they leave much to be desired in regard to game support. D-Fend Reloaded gives great DOS games their proper treatment in Windows. Here’s how to install it and play free games.
D-Fend Reloaded is a DOS emulation tool for Windows that runs circles around that operating system’s basic DOS emulation. You can tweak hundreds of settings to ensure you can play DOS games with obscure sound card, memory or CPU speed demands.
Thankfully, it works so well out of the box that you’ll only need to tweak games if they act up. We downloaded several games from DOSGames.com—including Scorched Earth, seen above—and the only thing we tweaked was whether or not the games would start in full-screen mode or inside a window. Full-screen mode made our triple monitor setup freak out and spend way too long rendering images and shifting resolution, though your results will vary.
You can download the application at the link below and jump right in, or visit How-To Geek to see a step-by-step setup tutorial.
D-Fend Reloaded is freeware, Windows only. Have a favourite source for DOS games or a favourite game you want to share? Let’s hear about it in the comments.
