Swipe To Start Voice Input On Android

A new-to-me Android 2.1 shortcut: If you want to use voice input without hunting down the microphone button on the keyboard, swipe your fingertip across the entire keyboard to start it instead. Start at 0:25 into the video to see it in action.

Gina, presumably this is from using a Nexus One? Any chance of an article about your experience of using the N1 in Aus? Many of us are teetering on ordering one, and a run down of your impressions would be very useful. Not so much the tech or Android 2.1 (which everyone has done), more about Aus specific issues like:

    - does the 3G/Edge switching issue reported in the US cause bother here (I already have it on my SonyEric Z800i dumbphone on 3 in Perth)?
    - does the Google navigator app give turn by turn directions in Aus?
    - any problems accessing the Marketplace?
    - will Aus users be able to update the firmware by USB (assuming over-the-air updates won't come until Voda bring the phone officially here)
    - presume standard USB charging is OK without an AC adapter?
    - any other hassles or quirks

    Cheers

Hi Chris, Gina writes for Lifehacker US, so she's not going to have any insight into the issues for early Oz importers. The switching issue would depend on your network; turn by turn _doesn't_ work in Oz; marketplace issues would depend on your SIM; I'd imagine USB charging would be fine.

        Thanks Angus.
Since I asked, I've found that there's a decent amount of experience on Australian Nexus One use building up on Whirlpool, with a Wiki on the major FAQs and forum comments from the early adopting crowd. Worth a look for anyone thinking of taking the plunge.
