Covering up a convertible or an infrequently-used car, for the week or the winter, keeps it looking crisp. Then again, covering a car is a huge pain. This cheap and automatic cover makes it a snap.
Mike did his best to keep his open-top cars clean and dust free, but it was such a hassle to put the cover cover on — doing it neatly was a two-person job — that he decided to make an automatic cover that would drop onto the car when the garage door was lowered and raise up when the door was opened.
The best part about Mike's design is the elegant integration with what he already had. He didn't want to use anything but the garage door mechanism to power the arrangement, so it's a simple system of pulleys and counter weights that use the garage door to raise and lower the cover. The cover itself is a of couple bed sheets sewn together, and the total system cost him about $US65 for pulleys, rope, sheets, and some miscellaneous pieces.
