Microsoft Office 2007 Will Stop Supporting Custom XML Features

A US Court of Appeals has upheld a patent infringement suit brought by a Canadian software company against Microsoft, and Microsoft now has until January 11 to either issue new versions or stop settling Office 2007, and Word 2007 specifically.

The case, which we've previously posted, involves i4i and Microsoft's use of "Custom XML" in most of its Office 2003 and 2007-era products. Microsoft states it is "working hard to comply with the injunction" and notes that the infringing material is nowhere in Office 2010. Meanwhile, some bloggers and software thinkers are glad to see Custom XML shuffle off. [Reuters, ongoing via Slashdot]
