If you want to impress a DIYer on your Christmas shopping list with an extremely useful addition to their toolbox, you'll score big by giving them a gimlet set.
What's a gimlet? Gimlets are an old-fashioned, but extremely practical, hand tool. You use them to make pilot holes for screws without having to use a drill. You put the half-circle handle in the palm of your hand and press into the surface you want to make the pilot hole in. A few turns later and you've got your pilot hole without the risk of boring too deep with a power drill or the hassle of trying to make the pilot with a screw and screwdriver.
A set of seven gimlets covering a wide range of common screw sizes will only set you back $US15. Have a favourite inexpensive gift that is far more useful than its small price tag would have you believe? Let's hear about it in the comments.
