The developers of Fennec, a.k.a. Firefox Mobile, have stated that support for add-ons will differentiate it from other mobile browsers. Much like Firefox’s desktop version, a preview build of reader favourite AdBlock Plus might ensure Fennec gets its proper due.
Web ads, the annoying and flashy kinds, are something a lot of browsers are eager to knock down with software like AdBlock Plus. Mobile ads, on the other hand, can notably slow down or delay browsing over hit-and-miss data connections.
AdBlock Plus’ build for Fennec is available for download now, but you’d have to be running a nightly build on one of the very few platforms it’s out for. It’s also very minimal, at the moment, letting you simply turn it on or off and select a single ad-blocking list.
We are, of course, an ad-supported site, and we try not to allow ostentatious, offensive, or oppressive advertising part of our mix, so we ask you to keep Lifehacker on your whitelist, mobile or not. Still, it’s heartening to see that some of Firefox’s most beloved extensions will make it onto Fennec, and that they’ll make the mobile web a swifter place for mobile browsing—someday soon.
