Tax Returns May Experience Delays In January
ComputerRoomRegular tax returns are already due in, but if you use an accountant you may still have some time up your sleeve. However, the ATO is warning that a planned systems upgrade in January could delay refunds for anyone who submits during that month.

The upgrade means ATO computers won’t be working at all between January 22 and 27, with some processes stopping before that, and delays may well flow over into February. (Given the general tendency for IT projects to overrun, I’d say that’s more likely than not.)

Official ATO advice is to submit before Christmas, especially if you’re expecting a refund. Whenever you submit, make sure to avoid common mistakes and check for changed regulations in 2009.
