It's easy to disregard toaster ovens in the world of home appliances. When you have a microwave and an oven, the toaster oven can seem redundant. However, these energy savers can do a whole lot more than just toast.

Unless you've lived in a small space, it can be difficult to understand the need for a toaster oven. But as environmentally friendly folks at weblog Treehugger point out, toaster ovens use half as much energy as a full size oven would and don't transfer that accumulated heat out into your home. (Even though as winter approaches, a lot of people appreciate the heat leaking from their ovens.) They also save you time because they don't take as long to preheat and can tackle 90% of things that you would normally use an oven for.
Apartment Therapy's kitchen-focused weblog The Kitchn rounds up 10 clever ways to utilise your toaster oven for more than just making toast and heating up leftover pizza, including:
- Warm plates before serving. Many large ovens only go down to 200°F which can be too high. A counter-top oven goes lower. I like heating plates for 5 minutes at 170°F.
- Cook side dishes (like stuffing) while the main oven is occupied with something bigger (the turkey).
