YouTube likes to promote the importance of user-generated content, but when it comes to what people actually view on the site, it turns out commercially-produced video — particularly music videos and movie trailers — are the most popular choice.
A survey of 3,000 Australian YouTube users commissioned by Google found that 51% regularly watched music videos on the site, followed by movie trailers (31%). User-generated content was viewed by 27% of respondents, just ahead of 26% for TV shows and — slightly strangely — 25% for TV ads.
The survey also suggested that just 20% of YouTube users have actually uploaded video, which broadly accords with other recent research. To improve your viewing experience, check out our Top 10 YouTube hacks.
