The Black Saturday bushfires on February 7 devastated the Australian community. A new site developed by the ABC recounts the events of that day and the stories of those affected through a combination of video, photos and other online records.
The Black Saturday site, built by the ABC’s innovation unit, lets you search via a timeline of events or within a specific location, or access a mosaic of first-hand recollections and information. Resources used to build the site include radio interviews, social media sites, online video and footage and information collected especially for the site. As the site itself points out, some of the imagery and footage is disturbing, but it’s also a fine demonstration of how online media can capture an event in a comprehensive way.
