Brazen Careerist, formerly a blog network headed by the oft-linked Penelope Trunk, launched today as a professional network that aims to help Generation Y share their ideas and interests, but maybe also land a job while doing so.
For a social/professional Network, Brazen Careerist is remarkably easy to get into, aided in large part by its Facebook Connect integration. Assuming you've already got a Facebook account, Brazen Careerist's home page quickly walks you through a few ideas on filling out your presence. Completing a web resume form is, well, a pretty familiar experience, but we like how the site lets you import your own blog's feed to fill in, or augment, your "Ideas" area, since we're all about having independent alternatives to the cloud. It'd be nice if the site let you delete certain posts from your feed, in case there's just a few items you didn't necessarily want to share on a pointedly career-minded site ("My new kitten is OMG SO CUTE"), rather than asking you to "contact the community manager. .Aside from a blog feed, you can post other "ideas" and materials to your feed, ideally the kind of pieces that bolster and prove what you've claimed in your resume, or just show what's on your mind in a non-meme-ish way.
Any new social network that opens always has a wait-and-see quality to it, though Brazen Careerist already has dedicated followers among its bloggers and contributors. We'll have to see if employers and online organizers follow suit, but, in the meantime, signing up is a free and pretty painless way to expand your personal/professional exposure.
