If you drop a valuable item such as a ring down your toilet, many times you can reach in and get it. But how about a valuable that's gone down the drain? Instead of paying for a plumber, try sucking it out using a vacuum and some pantyhose.

Household weblog Family Hack found a quick way around the down the drain dilemma. It involves taking a wet/dry shop vacuum, covering the end of the hose with some pantyhose, and then turning the vacuum on. When placed over your drain, the vacuum will suck your item up and out of the drain; the pantyhose prevents your item from going inside the vacuum. (The site offers a video demo if you need to see it in action.)
If you know of other clever ways to remove items from a drain (without pulling out your pipe wrench), share in the comments below.
