We're always on the lookout for alternative uses for common household items that would make MacGyver proud, and Real Simple comes through with several smart tips for making good with little, including this tip for prying open a stubborn jar using rubber bands and a little elbow grease.

It's a simple trick. When you're faced with a lid that won't budge, just wrap a rubber band around it several times to give you a better grip. Real Simple Magazine, who offered the tip, mentions using rubber bands on small lids, but we put their tip to use on larger lids and it also did the job—though not as easily. Thicker bands tend to work better than thinner ones. You'll also need less of them to secure a firm grip.
