Windows: Kantaris is, at its core, our favourite play-anything media app, VLC. But one programmer has changed the interface, integrated Last.fm streaming and Apple movie trailers, and given it a generally futuristic feel.
VLC has had built-in support for custom skins, including Winamp Classic importing, for some time, so it's not as if Kantaris is the only way to change up the looks of the default, if functional, look of VLC. But Kantaris seems to go a bit further than just tweaking buttons, adding some impressive visualisations, a consistent light-blue/steel look throughout the app and a somewhat more intuitive button placement, depending on how you think visually.
And if you're a fan of either Last.fm streaming recommendations, or killing a little time on Apple's movie trailer site, Kantaris has you covered in style. QuickTime trailers are lined up on a virtual shelf, while Last.fm is presented as a simple widget to type your favourite artists into.
Kantaris is a free download but, unlike VLC, is for Windows only, at least for the time being.
