HLO: Win $100 iTunes Credit

itunespileOne of the odder challenges I've set myself during Hand Luggage Only is to visit every Apple Retail Store in Australia in a single day. But while I get to do the organising and the hard yards, Lifehacker readers can reap the rewards — in the form of three $100 iTunes cards that are up for grabs.

Getting to two of the official Aussie Apple stores in a day - the flagship branch in Sydney's George St, and another in the Sydney suburb of Chatswood — isn't too hard. But the third one is located in Chadstone in Melbourne, so it's going to be a busy day come Thursday May 7, especially as I won't be using taxis at either end.

But what's bad for my shoe leather could be good for your wallet. At each store, I'm going to purchase a $100 iTunes card (or a pair of $50 cards, or five $20 cards depending how puckish I'm feeling — but the total value will be $100). Those cards are being offered as prizes to three lucky Lifehacker readers. You can't do much better when it comes to money-saving strategies for iTunes.

So how can you win yourself a card? I want you to come up with a list of five essential tracks which you'd suggest an iTunes newcomer should purchase as their first five additions to their shiny new iPod. Each track you suggest has to be currently available in the Australian iTunes store. Post your list in the comments below. After the competition closes, I'll pick the three most convincing and creative entries as winners.

Full terms and conditions can be found here. Entries close Friday May 8 at 5pm AEST, so get assembling those playlists!

Throughout May 2009, Lifehacker Australia editor Angus Kidman will be travelling throughout Australia with just one carry-on bag for the Hand Luggage Only project.

    omg First comment!

    1. Black Betty - Spiderbait
    2. Viva La Vida - Coldplay
    3. The Little Things - Danny Elfman
    4. Marvelous Things - Eisley
    5. Welcome To The Jungle - Guns 'N Roses

;) Awesome songs, all of them.
Unless, you like classical, country, Emo, Gothic Rock, Rap, Industrial, J-Rock, or something else.

      1. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
      2. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
      3. Michael Jackson - Beat It
      4. The Ramones - I wanna be sedated
      5. Pink - Jut like a pill

The tracks represent different styles of music that are available today.

The Cure - Just Like Heaven
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Breaking The Girl
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Led Zepplin - Stairway To Heaven
    Metallica - The Unforgiven

None of these are new but they are all amazing songs and anyone who doesn't have them on their iPod already should go out and download... Go on what are you waiting for.

Living End - Raise the alarm
    ACDC - Anything goes
    Wolfmother - Back Round
    Puddle of MUDD - Psycho
Offspring - You're gonna go far kid

Try to keep it more local and new, getting into the groove of buying music online over itunes. ENJOY!

    1. Hot Stuff - Donna Summers
    2. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
    3. Like A Virgin - Madonna
    4. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
    5. Physical - Olivia Newton John

Lets bring the disco back!! Groove to the music...turn up the volume on that brand new iPod!!

Although the previous 2 comments recommend some great songs, they're not the best out there for a "business" trip. My top 5 in no particular order:

    1. "Baby did a bad, bad thing" - Chris Isaac
    2. "Hotel California" - Eagles
    3. "Sympathy for the Devil" - Rolling Stones
    4. "The Boy in the Bubble" - Paul Simon
    5. "All summer long" Kid Rock

A song from each of the last 5 decades!

    In no particular order:

    Michael Jackson - Thriller
    Elvis - Jailhouse Rock
    Eminem - Lose Yourself
The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand
Jimmy Barnes - Khe Sanh (live)

King of Pop, King of Rock, Kind of Rap, Best Band Ever and a little bit of Aussie! What more can I say?

I like the logic of this list Michael, but as the Beatles aren't available on iTunes, it doesn't strictly qualify . . .

Oops, you're right. I forgot about that! I'll have to replace them with the next best band available on iTunes:

        Michael Jackson - Thriller
        Elvis - Jailhouse Rock
        Eminem - Lose Yourself
        Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Jimmy Barnes - Khe Sanh (live)

        Best of the best!

you'd be better buying them at Woolworths this week and getting the 15% off :)

    1. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit.
    2. Metallica - Enter Sandman.
    3. Three Days Grace - I hate everything about you.
    4. Placebo - Every Me and Every You.
    5. Fatboy Slim - Right here Right Now.

Angus - I'd advise an iPod virgin to go for some recent Australian classics for their essential playlist. With this in mind, please consider the following:

    1. The Waifs - London Still
    2. The Presets - My People
    3. Josh Pyke - The Summer
    4. Silverchair - Straight Lines
    5. Bernard Fanning - Wish You Well

I'd go with songs or versions you can only get on the iTunes store - what better way to show it off?

Sia - Breath Me (live) - iTunes Live From Sydney
New Order - Love Will Tear Us Apart - iTunes Originals
Ben Lee - Catch My Disease - iTunes Originals
Powderfinger - My Happiness (live) - Live From Sydney
U2 - Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Live in Paris

1: Raiders March - John Williams (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull)
2: Also Sprach Zarathustra - Richard Strauss
    3: Imagine - John Lennon
    4: Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
    5: Moonlight Sonata (first movement) - L.V.Beethoven

    1. Don't Trust Me - 3OH!3
    2. Poker Face - Lady Gaga
    3. Stacy's Mom - Fountains Of Wayne
    4. It's My Life - Bon Jovi
    5. Zombie - The Cranberries

This is some of my Favourite New and Old Songs

    1.)Smashing Pumpkins - Today
2.)Coldplay - Life in Technicolor (instrumental version)
3.)The Ting Tings - Shutup & let me go
    4.)Cog - My Enemy
5.)Empire Of The Sun - Walking on a dream

    Powder Finger - Sunsets
Silver Chair - Reflections of a Sound

Goo Goo Dolls - Better Days
    Counting Crows - Mr Jones

    1. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

    3. The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
    4. Powderfinger - (Baby I've Got You) On My Mind
    5. The Killers - Human

Songs that pump you up and make you want to dance! Some old, some new...

I guess these wouldn't be called conventional choices, but here goes:

    1. John Lennon - Mother.
    2. The Residents - Rabbit Habit.
    3. Kraftwerk - Autobahn.
    4. Interpol - Pioneer To The Falls.
    5. Efterklang - Swarming.

iTunes says Autobahn is an Album Only purchase. Does this count? :D

    1. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone- Born in The USA (yes it's a BS cover- beautifully desecrated!)
I think the cover of Graceland is better but not as funny...

    2. Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye (Jason Bentley Remix- dare I say better than the original?)

    3. Nina Simone- Little Girl Blue (Postal Service Remix) - (Verve Remixed 3 album- best of the lot by far, I have been playing this a bit lately)

    4. Themselves- Terror Fabulous (it's been my alarm for years and i am still not sick of it...)

    5. Deastro - The Shaded Forests (An absolute classic track IMHO, the rest of the album lacks something...)

I say stimulate the local economy, and rock out to a variety of amazing local music! You've got a better chance of being able to enjoy it live too then. Props to Nathan W for mentioning Cog also.

    1. Karnivool - Themata
    2. Gotye - Hearts A Mess
    3. Coda - Superpod
    4. Martin Martini and the Bone Palace Orchestra - The Men Who Don't Fit In
    5. Dead Letter Circus - Next In Line

I love articles like this, I almost always find something new I like.

    1) Viva la Vida - Coldplay
    2) Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - U2
    3) Gravity - John Mayer
    4) Thriller - Michael Jackson
    5) Imagine - John Lennon

    1. The Knack - My Sharona
    2. Boston - More than a Feeling
    3. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    4. Weezer - Pork and Beans
    5. Green Day - When I Come Around

    Perfect for any situation.

Songs no iPod should be without - so start with these so that you've at least got *some* good stuff (even if the rest is Britney Spears ...)

    1. 1st Movement of Beethoven's ninth - because whilst "Ode to Joy" is better known, the beginning of the 1st movement is just magnificent

    2. Colin Hay's "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin" - because everyone's heard "Land Down Under" but Men @ Work frontman Colin Hay is really great by himself. Adds a bit of classic Australian street cred.

    3. Split Enz "Poor Boy" - because they're a local classic and because I just saw the play of the same name and it was really good.

    4. All Mankind "Can You Hear Me" - because they're a small local (Sydney) band. Help out a lesser known band by buying it and playing it for all your friends. Also to prove that I listen to music from post-1960

    5. The Herd "I Was Only 19" - another local group (not on purpose, I swear) with one of those covers that even people who don't like the band's usual music can appreciate - i.e. the perfect song to buy as a single song on iTunes not on CD in a store.

    1. Whoomp- Tag Team (classic rap track)
    2. Ice Ice Baby- Vanilla Ice (every iPod needs this one)
    3. Kiss from a Rose- Seal(for if you get lucky with the ladies!)
    4. Wanted dead or Alive- Bon Jovi(for if you feel the need to burst out singing on public transport)
    5. Ride Wit Me- Nelly (Just in case you land a big business deal)

    1) U2 - City Of Blinding Lights
    2) Idiot Friends - Spongebob Squarepants
3)Sleep Walking Past Hope (Live, Digital Versatile Doom version) - HIM
4)Remember The Name - Fort Minor
    5)I Miss You - Blink-182

    1. You Me and the Bourgeoisie (The Submarines) - Come on, you've just bought an Apple product, you've gotta get into the spirit!
    2. Stairway to Heaven (Led Zepplin) - You've just invested in one of the coolest products around, you're already in your own little heaven right? Plus it's a little mix of rock 'n' roll, blues and heavy metal in one.
    3. My Generation (The Who) - What better way to sit back and relax than listening to a song like this?
    4. Dancing Queen (Abba) - OK not everyone loves Abba, but still it's a great song and who knows you might even start dancing youself.
    5. Breakeven (The Script) - I had to include a current top iTunes song, and I like this one at the moment. And who knows, one day I might break even after paying for that expensive iTouch :)

    1. Anthems for a Seventeen-year-old Girl – Broken Social Scene
    2. Magic – Ladyhawke
    3. Walking on a Dream – Empire of the Sun
    4. Lights & Music – Cut Copy
    5. Smooth Criminal? – Michael Jackson

    All euphoria, all the time.
