HLO Day 29: See Inside The Bag

The Hand Luggage Only project has almost come to an end — so it's as good a time as any to do a detailed photographic expose of what I've been carrying around in the infamous and now damaged bag.

I offered a detailed packing list right back at the beginning of this project, but a picture actually does a better job in some ways of showing how much you can fit in an airline-approved bag. First, for reference, here's the bag on its own:

And here's the bag with everything that it has to travel with when I move from one location to another:

There's one key missing object — the camera — since I needed it to take the photo:

HLO officially finishes up on Sunday when I fly to Melbourne (for other work and personal commitments), but I'll offer a summary of what I've learned on Monday. Thanks to everyone who's contributed throughout the journey — it's been a blast, even when I've been on the receiving end of some fairly sharp commentary. (If you expose your life to the public, a thick skin is definitely a pre-requisite!)

Throughout May 2009, Lifehacker Australia editor Angus Kidman will be travelling throughout Australia with just one carry-on bag for the Hand Luggage Only project.

Is that a wooden Bowl above what looks like glasses case above the silver laptop (next to the blue cup). I cant believe I am now obsessing over what you have brought with you.

What did you use to take the picture of the camera with?

It's amazing what you can do with mirrors

Even with the lens cap on? wow mirrors really are amazing

Maybe a Mobile phone? bluetooth / email the photo...

Here's a tip to save space. Maybe if you packed a smaller camera, you'd have more room for...I don't know....clothes?

When I first wrote up my packing list, I explained why the camera was, for me, a work essential, even though it took up so much space. Most people might be quite happy to just take pics with their phone or a compact digital, but in a sense the camera stands in for whatever key equipment your job needs (lots of people would travel with a projector, for instance).
