Show Google Reader Unread Counts In The FavIcon

Firefox with Greasemonkey: User script GReader FavIcon Alerts adds a tiny text over top of the Google Reader icon, to show you at a glance how many unread items you have.

Lifehacker reader Peter created this script (based off his previously mentioned Gmail FavIcon Alerts) as an easy way to see how many unread items you have by simply glancing at the icon in the tab—or if the window is minimized you can see the unread count in the taskbar.

The explanation in his own words:

  • An unread count is overlaid on the Google Reader icon. The count increases up through 1000.
  • The count is indicated when over 1000.

As with the Gmail script, the author recommends combining this with the FaviconizeTab extension to shrink the tab down to just the icon—saving valuable space on the Firefox tab bar. For even more customisations, be sure you've checked out the Better GReader extension. Thanks, Phillip!

GReader FavIcon Alerts is a free download, requires Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension.
