Corners are tough spaces to work with when it comes to laying out a room, especially if you're trying to fit a desk in there. Josh pulls it off with a well-placed bookcase.
The problem with a corner desk is you're almost always stuck with two outcomes: you either have a wide open desk with a ton of dead space behind it or you have a hutch style desk with a store built up on the desk. The problem with the former is that you send up staring into an empty corner and while the latter makes better use of the space it's usually an eyesore and makes the room seem smaller because it walls off the corner of the room.
Josh took a different approach. He left his desk wide open save for a portable hardrive, laptop, and lamp. Rather than leaving the triangle behind the desk completely empty however, he put a small bookcase behind his desk to act as a stand for an external monitor. The arrangement is neither boringly empty nor overbearingly large like a hutch desk would be. Moving from computer work to some good old fashioned analogue work is easy when all it takes to clear your desk is setting your laptop to the side.
