DIY Wall-Mounted Charging Station And Laptop Desk
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on October 13, 2008
A user on website Tilted Forum Project made a few DIY adjustments to a wall-mounted entertainment centre kit to build a cordless desk and charging station. The result: a lot of charging capacity, a nice, clean desk, and only one visible cord in the entire setup. You may not have access to the same materials just laying a round the house, but we think this setup offers some nice inspiration.

Unless they want me to buy two separate cords.

What if I have to take my gadgets around with me on trips? How do I go about removing those cords I'd've spent so much time concealing? This is my main problem with docking stations, is that they kind of defeat the concept of portability for a lot of the gadgets they're made for.

@katscanne:
I dislike fish around my workspace as well.

I never did like having cods in my workspace. ^_^
Very nice looking set-up, wish I had the time/energy/money/walls I could drill in without getting charged to do something similar.

I'm all about cable management, but I can see this person is someone who has a docking station for their laptop and they don't move their setup terribly often. The laptop comes off, everything else stays put. Pretty slick!
I'd be curious if that cable management comes open easily for troubleshooting purposes or if you need to add or remove components from your setup. It'd kind of suck if you had to disassemble all of this just to install a new printer, or if you bought a new mouse, or if you got a new cell phone that uses a different charger.

@Arvin Bautista: There's a compromise to be had, you know - you don't have to make your workspace look exactly the same!

@Archnemesis_Goldenhair:
Er, what's a cad ?

@ai.scorp: Though a cod would be better than a cad.

"full-time appreciators of the codless workspace"
As a rule, I always try to keep my workspace fish free.

@ai.scorp: I have no idea but it makes me want battered cod even more now...
Back on track it is a nice looking workspace.

My printer is kind of "on the way" on my desk. I will try this project to put it on an elevated but unobstructed position.
Thanks!

@Arvin Bautista: Buy another charger :) I keep 3 for all my common items - one for the office, one for home and one for my briefcase.

Ooh I like it. I might have to re-do my charging shelf.

I'm very glad that you appreciate work-spaces without fish.

@labete: This is the easiest way. You can usually pick up el-cheapo charger cables at department stores that work just as well as the ones that came with the original product.
Personally I'd pick up the cheap cables and use them in the set up, leaving my original cables to take with me traveling. But again, that's just me.

@Archnemesis_Goldenhair: And better yet than a cod-piece [en.wikipedia.org] (although a little better protection in the office would come in handy sometimes)

@eskiz: Hammer drill + masonry anchors, or liquid nails + wood to give yourself something to mount to.

@Arvin Bautista: This is my setup, and I do have duplicate chargers for everything, including my laptop. The convenience is worth it.

This is actually my setup...I was too lazy to properly format it for my blog, so I just posted it on the forum instead.
I'll gladly answer any questions--and yes, it is quite cod free, although the occasional fish-flavored piece of catfood may wind up near it.
I actually only took pictures of it because I was moving and had to take it apart...still haven't decided what to do at my new house.

@phoenix: This is actually my setup...I'm shocked to see it on lifehacker, haha. I don't actually have a docking station, just a power cord in the right place...most of my laptop use is done on the couch, working while charging is strictly emergency only.
The cable management does come apart quite easily, though as I've said, the whole desk in its current incarnation just treats the laptop as yet another chargeable device.

It would appear that the photos are offline due to excessive bandwidth consumption.

I am going to start building my now. I am a full-time college kid and as cluttered as my room is, this idea would be great.
