YouTube Gets Full-Length Episodes of Star Trek, MacGyver
Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:14 AM on October 11, 2008
YouTube is now offering 15 50-minute episodes of classic TV shows including Star Trek, MacGyver, and Beverly Hills, 90210 with "prominent new ads." Coupled with YouTube's newly-launched theatre view, this looks like an easy way to wile away a weekend. [via]

All I get is "This video is not available in your country." What's the point of posting an article about videos we can't watch in Australia?

Sorry guys -- I'm in Europe, I checked this before reposting it and it was accessible here, so I assumed it wasn't strictly US only. Obviously there's a more complex set of rights issues . . .

This is perfect! Since the new 90210 spin off came out, I've been wanting to watch the original 90210. I never got the chance much because I was too young when it first aired.

More lame US only crap! It's not YouTube that decides this though, it's the content provider CBS.

I can't believe people are complaining about YouTube having ads. YouTube has to be one of the most expensive sites to run that has the fewest number of ads. It's amazing that something as big and resourceful as YouTube is free, I'm sure a few ads won't kill you.

@MuglyTheWorm: Why because it's getting shows with ads? unless you wanna buy the season dvds, and are available in your country, this is the only way to see old shows, unless you wanna look for some reruns in midnight airtimes.

@jtraveller: I saw this trick posted elsewhere. Not sure if it allows you to view the video in your country or not. Taking the Playlist "Star Trek"; it's first video link is:

Make it: [kr.youtube.com]
where "watch?v=" replace with "v/"

Whatever. There's still bittorrent, folks. Much as I like Youtube, and would be willing to watch the classics in their interface, I'll just keep downloading them from other sources. Quality is better, and there's no ads. And it's still legal here in Canada (downloading, that is), so the American content providers can bite me- it's their own greed that's causing this problem anyways: by having vastly different licensing agreements in each country they do business in, they limit what's available in an attempt to maximise their profits (see DVD region coding). I'll keep on giving them the digital finger until they make it easy for me to get their content legitimately.
Eventually, Americans will realise they're not the only ones on this planet who can produce good entertainment. I already watch more stuff from the UK than from American studios anyhow (Torchwood, Lab Rats, Dr. Who, to name a few), and when it comes to actually spending money on stuff like that, I send as much as possible to Joss Whedon, 'cause he's smart and makes me want to give him money. It's not really hard to get me to want to give you my money, you just need to be creative.
Anyhow, I better get back to the poop deck and check on my scurvy crew. We've got a few more American TV shows to pirate!
