OpenOffice.org 3.0 Final On A Server Near You
Posted by Adam Pash at 2:30 AM on October 11, 2008
If our first look at OpenOffice.org 3.0 has you salivating for the official download of this free Microsoft Office replacement, the final release has already been pushed to a mirror near you (like this one). Expect an official release announcement on Monday. [via Ghacks]

@.endejas.: (I didn't want to risk compatibility issues in college, and the entire campus has upgraded to Office 2007 anyways.)

I've relied on OpenOffice to get me through high school without having to buy MS Office, and I'm really impressed by what the developers are getting done.
I can't help but feel a little guilty when I took up the offer of buying MS Office Ultimate 2007 for $60 on that student plan.

@Gonzie: I figured that link would get overloaded, and so I chose another mirror. I'm getting a decent download speed (600+KB/sec).

@jokono: Cool! I'm a sophomore at the U, so it was nice to have a mirror with a really fast download speed.

@.endejas.: dont feel bad abut it at all.
openoffice is a GREAT product, but in all seriousness, depending on the setup you need, it is not a direct replacement for office.
especially if you will be using exchange in your college system.
i know many colleges that will require exchange full compatibility for their incoming students to keep things running smoothly.
and MOST postgraduate schools will as well.

Any ideas on how long it will be until we see it in the Ubuntu repos?

@.endejas.: You should totally feel guilty. How dare you spend money on an application to avoid compatibility issues that will only make you more of an outsider in an already socially hostile learning environment?

Guys, the P2P links are up on the OO.o Web site, so you can use that right now. Just choose version 3.0.0.

It is identical to rc4 so no need to reinstall if you've already got that one.
OOo_3.0.0rc4_20080930_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe
What OO really lacks is a larger community of extension writers. Think Firefox.

@OCEntertainment: You shouldn't feel guilty. There is still no equal to MS Office. Zoho and OpenOffice are doing some great things that I applaud them for. But they still have a ways to go before they can offer a true alternative to MS Office. It still lacks functionality. Check it out, you will see what I mean.
I went with MS Office and I don't feel a bit guilty. But I am still curious about the progress of Zoho and OpenOffice. Personally, I am more excited about Zoho.

I wish (maybe next version) that Calc supported as many rows as Excel 2007. Sadly, many people at my work need to open these unbelievably huge spreadsheets (budgeting crap...) that are more than 65536 rows, which basically limits them to using Excel. I have been trying to push for deploying OO.o across the entire userbase, but stuff like this prevents it. =\

I can not understand why Writer's case changing commands are all or nothing. You can either use Uppercase command to make a word ALL CAPS or the Lowercase command for all lowercase. Where is Capitalize or Title Case, where only the first letter of a word gets capitalized?

@pschroeter: That's the great thing about open source. If something bugs you - you can see if anyone else has complained, and if not let the developers know directly!
Searching for "change case" on the OOo site gave me this link very quickly:
From the looks of things, they're working on it but it wasn't something they brought in for version 3.0.

@urpwnd: IMHO if you have a spreadsheet with more than 10000 rows you should start to put your stuff into a database and stop using Excel, so count this as a blessing in disguise

@aphexbr: Thank you for finding that for me. I have already created a macro as a work around this and was venting that it wasn't added in 3.0. I think I was also fishing for someone to tell me of an OO extension to help me, I haven't found one.
I do think 3 looks a lot nicer though, but I just use the word processor occasionally and haven't seen the changes that warrant that change to version 3.

Don't they have a torrent link for it somewhere?
Here's hoping it launches faster and has better Word compatibility (my resume still has some weird spacing/indentation issues in OOo2).

OpenOffice 3 Final is the same as OpenOffice rc4, which has been installed on my machine for a few days now. I love it. OOo got me through seminary. I find OOo's formatting options to be superior to MSO.
