SonicSwap Streams And Shares Your iTunes Playlists
Posted by Gina Trapani at 11:09 AM on October 10, 2008
New webapp SonicSwap hosts your iTunes playlists on the web and streams the music in them free and legally without requiring you to perform tedious file uploads or use any of your computer's upload bandwidth. SonicSwap doesn't host your gigabytes of music files—you just give it your current iTunes playlists, and it pulls the tracks and videos named in them from YouTube, and recreates them in a drag-and-drop web-based version of iTunes. Sign up for a free SonicSwap account, upload your iTunes playlists either via the web site or using an iTunes plug-in, and you can listen to and share your library's playlists (including Smart Playlists) at SonicSwap, which includes video playback of the YouTube clip. Here's a full screenshot what it looks like.

Here's a direct link to this playlist at SonicSwap so you can try it out.
In my tests, the Java applet that you upload your iTunes Library.xml file with failed, but the iTunes plug-in is an alternative method. Here's a video from the SonicSwap folks that explains how the app works.
Once you've uploaded your library, you can make it public, add friends, find other playlists, and even download others' playlists to your current library on your computer. TechCrunch reports that because of the YouTube API, occasionally you'll get a bum song (like a karoake version), but my cruise through other users' playlists yielded good results.

I don't use iTunes so it would be nice if it worked with the other popular players: winamp, wmp, vlc, foobar, songbird.
Is there an easy way to create an iTunes playlist that could be uploaded without actually using iTunes?

If you want to get a hold of your iTunes library, I use a program called Mojo. It works pretty well... for the most part anyways. For a while it only worked on Mac, then only on Mac and XP and recently they got it ported over to Vista. There are still a few kinks, but I would keep your eye on this one.

You can try Cucusoft DVD to iPod Video Suite to rip DVD movie and convert videos in any format to iPod. It is the fastest converter I have used. Also, the output quality is great. You can download this software free from here:

Something I use in tandem with iTunes (or winamp) which has always worked perfectly for me and is also cross platform is Simplify Media.
It actually does stream your whole itunes library to people who you decide to share it with. They have to get the little app as well but its lightweight... and I think its great.

some thing like this for foobar would be fantastic!
i used firefly media server for a bit (though it requires itunes as the client..
recently i have been using jukefly which only needs a web browser as client. been working great!

@MatchzMalone: That's exactly what I was wondering. What are the chances that all of my songs are on YouTube?

It sounds cool, but I highly doubt my off the wall metal tastes will coincide with youtube...

Signed up this morning, and its pretty good (so far)
1: correct - if it cant find your tune, it will either skip, or play the 30 second preview available at Amazon or iTunes store
2: noticed a few videos arent the artist, but user submitted (i.e. Funk 49 performed by some Hendrix looking street performer)
3: No "shuffle" feature, so playlists play straight thru on Artist field. I submitted a request for shuffle feature.
My library has about 23000 (that is correct) tracks, and yeah, alot of them have botched meta data, but still the results are positive.
S far so good....

I like Simplify Media for this.
Plus they have the iPhone app for streaming music while in the car.

@jupiterthunder: yes, I agree. I use WinAmp on my PCs and iTunes on Mac. Interoperability is key for applications to take the world by storm.
