RTM Notifier Puts Remember The Milk Alerts On Your Desktop
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on October 8, 2008
Windows/Mac/Linux: Free application RTM Notifier periodically checks in with popular to-do list web site Remember the Milk and displays notifications for time-sensitive tasks. The goal of the application is two-fold: On one level, it's just a notification tool, displaying pop-up alerts for due tasks. Beyond that, it's a desktop entry point for your RTM tasks. Both features could be improved upon (especially since RTM has an open API), but if you manage all your to-dos with RTM, it might be worth checking out. RTM Notifier is a free download, requires Adobe AIR.

This stays on top of all my other programs unless I am doing something wrong.

I'm sick of all these Adobe Air apps. Doomi ran painfully slow when I tried it, and even though a reinstall cured it, it was painfully buggy.
I appreciate the cross-platform trisexuality of the framework, but I don't want everything to rely on Air. Waiting for a good non-Air release.
Hmph.

I get this functionality on OS X by using Fluid [fluidapp.com] , and making an app (in my case, of Toodledo's mobile interface) and setting it to be chromeless, slightly transparent, embedded in the desktop (meaning it isn't used by Expose), and with no shadow.

It is sure to be a useful app for all RTM users specially if they don't keep their browsers open.
And it informs you only about the number of tasks that are due. It seems to be not very informative.
We use Task2Gather ([taks2gather.com]). Though there is no such notifier Task2Gather shows what is new in your project. For example, when you work togather with your coleagues or simply share your projects with your family members they can comment on your tasks or add some new items to the shopping list. Such tasks with changes are shown in bold. So when I want to know what's new I simply open the projects written in bold and read what's new.

@neilw21: If it's wrong, then we're both doing it. I like the potential for this app, but it's not there yet.

Just thought I'd post this link for fans of RTM: Remember the Milk in Google Reader!. This is a Greasemonkey script that adds a handy cow icon next to the post titles in Google Reader. Whether your flagging posts for later comment, highlighting a job, or marking a classified listing from Craigslist, this little script has a couple of advantages over just starring something. For one, you can assign different categories. Secondly you can set timed reminders and priority ratings. Used in conjunction with RTM's Gmail Firefox extension, you'll be able to keep track of all the posts you meant to act upon (but never did). Hope ya likes it!

The one main thing holding me back from RTM is the lack of Outlook synchronization. I need it to sync with my tasks.

@chiieddy: If you have a Windows Mobile phone you can get it to sync with Outlook. You'll need to sign up for a pro account, but then you can just use MilkSync to with RTM to your phone and then your phone to Outlook. Works very well for me.

This is a bit like Digsby for me - i.e. cool in principle, but rendered pointless by the fact my Firefox browser covers all that. In this instance, its the RTM widget for Netvibes that does the job.

Tried it... it seems that you can't complete/edit/add tasks directly in the little control panel. From an interface standpoint, I would expect to click on the tray icon, bring up my list of tasks, and then handle them all from the control panel.
Still holding out hope for future releases, but as it is now, not too terribly useful for my workflow.
