VCD Quality Provides A Peek At A Movie's Quality Before You Download
Posted by Adam Pash at 2:00 AM on October 7, 2008
Web site VCD Quality tracks videos distributed online and provides a wealth of information about each release—including a screenshot or two demonstrating the quality of the video and separate video and audio ratings. The site also links to the movie's IMDb page, lets you know what group released it, and informs you of the source media (e.g., DVD rip). If you download a fair share of movies online, you've probably been burned by a grainy, low quality download before. VCD Quality is there to help you avoid wasting those hours downloading a bum film. You can't actually download anything directly from VCD Quality, but if you've followed our beginner and intermediate guides to BitTorrent, you already know what you're doing.

Correction: "...Provides a Peek..." :-)

Unless there's a play on words somewhere in there that I'm not fully comprehending, "peek" might be a better word. I only bring this up because I did a search for "Peak quality movies" and this is what came up. Not exactly what I was looking for.

As someone who's used it before many times, I have only one caveat about VCDQuality.
Visiting the site the other day, after installing the newest Google toolbar, it promptly informed me that it had found a link on VCDQuality that had tried to distribute some bad something or other to its computer. It told me I was taking my own computer's life into my own hands by visiting the site.
So I went ahead and went to the site anyway.
I've never had a problem with getting any virii or malware from them - though apparently Google has. Make of it what you will.

Yeah, I've really gotten burned on a few of the movies I've stolen over the years. Glad there's finally a way to make sure that I'm not getting ripped off when I download copyrighted material.

Wow, I've been using VCDQuality for years. Glad to see it made its way onto Lifehacker.

When you download a torrent, you'll usually have a sample included. Just get that no?

VCD Quality is great for XVID and DVDs, but for HD, it's pretty much empty. Any similar site for HD?

I really love LifeHacker, and have dl'ed stuff off torrents and USENet before, but I don't want to see this site shut down for supporting piracy.

I use the preview feature in Forstwire about 4% in order to make sure it isn't one of those website ad movies "You need to visit this site to view this movie" or a copy of "Loose Change".

@SiPhuYoda: I also have been using it forever. But I am not glad to see it make its way onto lifehacker. I like to keep these kind of websites a bit more quiet..

@Woodwater: In my experience, only a fraction of torrent downloads have samples included.

@illtron: Well, if you're going to pirate something, you may as well do it right.

@kph59: For people that DONT know about video quality, that site is actually quite helpful.
It's like you are taking a cooking class and scoff at the fact that you are learning how to make eggs just because you know how to make cookies from scratch.

@portezbie: Ditto. Then again, you can actually get the torrents from this site so lifehacker might not want to promote it.

Lmao lifehacker. RULE #1 OF THE SCENE: THE SCENE IS NOT PUBLIC. VCD isn't even that great of a site.

Been using VCD Qaulity for awhile now and it really comes in handy. I just hate seeing it go public lie this.

VCDQuality used to be THE site, but now there are a couple alternatives that I use all the time. ZeroSec and ReleaseLog. They do pretty much the same thing as VCDQuality except they actually give you more info on the movie and links to download it as well.

Stunned that you've only just discovered that site! What next? Recommending Amazon as a place to buy books, or YouTube for watching videos? :-) @ DC_Cooper - yeah, had the same thing the other day. Just ignored it. Site is totally safe.

You may want change your headline: 'Peak' means 'the highest point'. I think you meant 'Peek', as in 'a quick look'.

Using this site for many years too... recently my Firefox bloacked it, but I changed my trusted sites and it's fine again

I've been using it for several years now. Definitely valuable for knowing when stuff gets released. Don't know what I'd do without it.

@illtron: No joke. I disagree with calling a bad download "getting burned" roughly as much as I disagree with calling copyright infringement "stealing." It's just silly.

I've also been using it for several years. Very handy site, but I too am not thrilled about it going 'public' so-to-speak.
