Save Time De-corking Your Wine With The Slide Technique
Posted by Adam Pash at 3:00 AM on October 4, 2008
Noisy wine expert Gary Vaynerchuck offers a quick but smart tip for removing the foil sleeve from a bottle of wine without the tedious cover trimmers. His simple secret: Just pull it off. This may not be mind-blowing if you already knew this seemingly obvious trick, but if you didn't, it's a real time-saver.

Lifehacker, you've really dropped your standards into the gutter with this one!
What a waste of time viewing this abrupt little clip was!
From the painful whip-crack start, to the fraudulent anticlimax, the shyster presenting this fraudulent piece managed to grate and annoy the viewer non-stop.
I don't know what part of the world this monkey's living in, but his little trick doesn't work on any bottle of wine I've seen, (except a cheap bottle with a plastic cap which had somehow escaped the heat-shrink process), and I've produced many bottles of wine, and enjoyed wines throughout Europe.
I don't know whether this was intended as comedy or some kind of late April Fool's joke, but whatever it was, it failed.
Lifehacker should include some sort of warning label if it's going to offer these sorts of nasty surprises to its audience.
Something like, "Content Highly Questionable", and "Particularly Abrasive Presentation", or "Intentional Humour".
If you start treating your audience like idiots, you'll soon find it's a form of self-abasement.

@bobba: I prefer the bag'o'wine... A couple of brands have actually done away with the box, it its just the bag now. Less mess, less waste, easier transport. Its win-win-win-win!
But, I don't drink wine, so meh.

Been doing this for years. Doesn't work on all bottles. Buy a screw top bottle and you're in in less than 5 seconds.

As a bartender I'm letting you know that this doesn't always work as easily. Like stated the quality of foil varies in bottles, as well as the shape of the lip on them. Not to mention it doesn't work on the ones that have the foil tapped to the bottle. But generally it works just fine. Oh and no way should it take you 1:43 to take the foil off a wine bottle.
For some reason while I was watching the video I felt like he was trying to sell me something I didn't really need but wanted to buy anyway.

Haha he BLEW my mind!
Some of the restaurant servers @ my hotel taught me this a while ago though... it technically doesn't work for every bottle, but for the majority of them.
Just don't be surprised when you run into one that simply won't come off because of the way the bottle is shaped.

I should also point out that I tested this on a bottle and it worked as advertised. That doesn't mean it'll work on every bottle, of course, as I'm sure the strength of the seal varies from bottle to bottle. Either way, though, I'll be happy to use the slide technique whenever I can.

@undefined: A screw top doesn't mean it has to be bad wine. Corks have been proven to actually be slightly inferior for keeping a good seal. They're used because people expect them.

As has been said, I'm a bartender and it definitely does not always work.
You know what does?
Just putting the corkscrew into the cork THROUGH the foil, it rips right through the foil and you can then pull it off. Not the prettiest, but working in a busy bar it gets the job done without having to whip out the little knife and spend extra time cutting the foil off.

this is only ok for bad wines or this is stupid, - you must not shake a bottle of wine - the foil sleeve must be on the bottle - in a restaurant, a bottle must be open at your table

Faster isn't always better. I think if you want to just 'drink' vs. 'enjoy' a bottle of wine, this is fine. But if you are with a group of people and are opening the bottle to share with friends, it seems a bit crass to slip off the seal this way. Kind of reminds me of a bar 'trick' like opening beer bottles with your teeth.

well, another no brainer is that one could enjoy the whole ritual around a bottle of wine, including cutting the foil, de-corking it slowly, letting the wine "breath" (if it's red) or chilling the glasses (if it's white) and so forth. Maybe even candles.
I like Italian wines anyway, and they come with that extra-seal (mark) so you can't apply this technique. I tried on a bottle of California wine in supermarket and it worked :-P. To cut the foil I use the tip of my corkscrew.

@Adam Pash: I've been doing that for years...mostly because while as a kid I always wanted to open my dad's wine (which kid doesn't?) and hated cutting it off with the cork. So, just snap it off. If you find you don't have the strength for it, twist it a bit first.
I honestly am in awe that this is an amazing feat.
