Books Catalogues Your Favourite Reads
Posted by Gina Trapani at 5:16 AM on October 4, 2008
Mac OS X only: Open-source application Books is a personal database of all the books you own, read, borrowed, or lent out. With hooks into Amazon and other book information services, you can type the title of a book into Books, and automatically suck in the author, ISBN, cover art, summary, publisher, and other metadata right into the app. Enter multiple reviews and notes for each book, and you can even attach files to a book (like, say, a sample chapter you downloaded). Keep track of who you lent a book to and when as well, and make smart lists of books based on criteria—like all books whose keyword contains the word "business," or all books by a particular author. Take a look at some screenies of Books in action.
You can list your books in "gallery" mode to see cover art:

Here's an individual book record:

While Delicious Library is probably the best pay-for version of a Mac media library tracker, Books is fantastic, free, books-only solution for Mac users. Books is a free download for Mac OS X only.

Is there something similar for windows?
And by similar I mean:
1) Installed locally (i.e. librarything would not fit criteria)
2) Connects to Amazon, etc to get the data
3) It relies on ISBN data if available, otherwise it will search based on the data manually inputted (e.g. Author, Title)
4) It copes with international books (i.e. it will handle books only published in France, Italy, Spain, UK and it is not US centred only) - this implies that it should be able to connect to more than just Amazon.com
I know, lots of criteria :) but maybe somebody here has some suggestions...

I use "Books" to keep track of my reading, however, one gripe I do have with the app is that it's scanner ability isn't very good. Half the time I put the barcode up to my macbooks camera it won't recognize it. And you have to hold it just right at a certain angle just to get the app to see it properly. From what I gather from testing Delicious Library on a friends laptop that it performs a lot better in that area...plus it can allow you to scan and document all your DVDs and CDs as well. Free is good but I would like a better scanning system.

I use librarything.com to keep an inventory of my library. It's free if you have less than 200 books. $25 buys you a lifetime membership. There's a nice social aspect, too. You get to see other libraries that have books in common with your library. It's a good way to find new things to read.

The "iRead" Facebook app is pretty good for this. That's where I track what I have read and are planning to read.
I stopped reading for like 10 years and just picked up the habit again. Keeping track of what I read publicly on my profile helps keep me motivated.

I've gotten a few invites from goodreads.com, but I haven't checked it out. So far, the only thing I've used to keep track of what I've read is a pretty good Facebook app - Bookshelf (which is linked with Amazon, @ rmagere). Trouble is, I've just got so many other projects going on that I don't know if I Want to sit down and catalog Everything I've ever read.

I've been using Shelfari ([www.shelfari.com]) for a while now and have been really happy with it. They just got bought by Amazon a month ago. They also have a pretty decent Facebook app too.

@crompsy: Damn, beat me to it. Works across platforms and has many additional features. You can add "lent out" or "borrowed" or "given away" shelves and can track all sorts of information through comments on books.

@crompsy: Exactly. I'd like to know what features this app has over this great online database.

I use Libra for a while, kept catalogue some of my books, manga, movies, and music. It's not the greatest, but it's also free.

@rmagere: I've used ReaderWare. Not pretty but I think it meets all your criteria. Also available in Windows or Mac. See [www.readerware.com]

Three or four of the five words in the title can be either nouns or verbs. It took me a long time to parse that sentence.

Shelfari makes me want to vomit. All style and no substance.
I like the shelves feature and the look of Goodreads but there is no significant data about the books.
Librarything gives me great discussions, tags, reviews and good, hard data on what I'm reading. As soon as they get that Collections feature implemented, Librarything will officially have every single feature that can be found on other book sites.
And for those who are too cheap to pay for a LT account (like I was), just hang around and win one of their contests for a free membership (it's very easy).

I've found Tellico ([periapsis.org]) a good collection manager:
- free
- KDE (linux only right now, but that will probably change soon)
- handles books, movies, etc
- talks to multiple web sources for information: amazon is just one of them

@rmagere:
I have been looking for something like this, and I found MediaDB. It's not perfect (its only source for information is Amazon and it doesn't recognize isbn 13), but it's free and works rather well.
