AnVir Task Manager Free Is A Feature-Rich Replacement For The Windows Default
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on October 2, 2008
Windows only: AnVir Task Manager Free is a Windows Task Manager replacement boasting an enormous feature set. This utility can manage startup applications, running applications, processes, services, and oh-so-much more. When you select a running process in the top pane, the bottom pane provides a wealth of information about the process, from a brief description of what it does to the network connections it's making and DLLs it's using. One of my favourite unusual features is the Check with AntiViruses on VirusTotal right-click option—which streamlines my favourite method of determining if a file really has a virus. You can find tons of Task Manager replacements out in the wild, but AnVir still manages to stand out. If you want even more functionality, this free download is also available in a Pro version with a kitchen sink full of features.

If you have to pay to unlock the full feature set, it's shareware, not freeware.

This is a really good app if you buy it. The free version DOES NOT have detailed descriptions of the apps running. If you are looking for a program that does and is free try Process Quick Links 2.

+1 for Process Explorer. Heck, +1 for any SysInternals application.

After a quick look this looks pretty good, but I think I prefer Autoruns combined with Process Explorer. I can't find anything to complain about with this though, and it certainly is a nice "one stop shop" for startup / services / applications / processes etc... Even the free edition is pretty full featured.

I already have another anti-virus application (AVG Free). Will this work with that, or does in need AntiVir's own anti-virus app?

Wow, that is a lot of features! How slow is it? Occasionally I run Task Manager to deal with a process which is seriously slowing down my computer. Task Manager itself can be slow then and I wouldn't want something slower. For example I use Process Explorer instead of task manager sometimes but I don't want to replace Task Manager with it.

Just tried it, and it was better than the standard windows one, but a bit too cluttered. I use DTask Manager, and that is the best one I've used so far.

@ChambrasWeed: Much agreed! Seems like we've seen a glut of task manager replacements lately. I think a Hive Five is definitely in order.

System Explorer, Process Lasso, and Process Explorer, all great alternatives. I favor them in that order ;)
System Explorer is LOADED with options.

This program is a mess to the point that I don't find it useful, process explorer is overkill and it's a memory hog which is just what you don't need when you need it (!). I like the uncared for Starter ([codestuff.tripod.com]) - processes (including dependencies) and services including hidden driver services (which has saved me recently). Clean obvious interface, free, its a bit old so I don't know about Vista.

I don't agree with you. Process Explorer is good app, but I love AnVir Task Manager more than Process Explorer.

@jsmorley: Agree. Process explorer with autoruns is rather a solid combination.
