MouseJail Keeps Your Cursor On The Right Screen
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 12:30 AM on October 1, 2008
Windows only: There aren't many computer games that support dual monitors; the vast majority simply fail to acknowledge there might be two, three, or more monitors attached to a computer. In the best case scenario the cursor can leave the primary screen and you simply have to scoot it back into the main screen. In the worst case scenario games will crash or exit play suddenly when the cursor ends up outside the window of play. MouseJail is a tiny (3k!) application that will effectively jail your mouse cursor to the primary screen while the game is in session, ensuring you won't have to hunt for it on other unused screens or risk crashing your game. MouseJail is a free download for Windows only. Photo by annia316.

Awesome. Now does anyone have a program that will disable the Windows key on the keyboard?

I've always used UltraMon for this, but this is a great idea to have it in a little app.
Brodie, I think autohotkey could probably do it (try making a new hotkey, but not putting anything for it to do).
I just don't press the button <_<

Aaargh! It seems like all these applications exists to taunt me and my unique problems (computer related).
This seemed like a great solution when I play Warhammer Online on my tv, but ofcourse that uses a launcher so I'm pretty sure this won't solve my problem.
Guess I'll have to keep disabling my monitor when playing on the tv. :/

Nice find. I recently decided that switching to a single-monitor setup was less of a hassle than turning the extra monitor off (and in the process powering down several devices) every time I wanted to play TF2, for fear of killing the game with an errant click.

@brodie7838: If you don't need the Windows key ever, then you can use SharpKeys and map that key to nothing. Not sure about temporarily disabling it though.

As a DirectX beta developer since day one, this problem has driven me nuts. I was constantly amazed at the number of DX apps that would not behave on multiple display systems.
In the early sdk, there was a single command to restrict the pointer to the launched monitor.
Even without that command, one can easily control/limit the cursor with similar code:
this.mousePointer.RestrictZone = new Rectangle(0, 0,
this.graphics.GraphicsDevice.Viewport.Width,
this.graphics.GraphicsDevice.Viewport.Height);
But then, lazy programmers create jobs for others.

@TetsuBo@TetsuBo:
If your application uses a launcher you can use this program to restrict your mouse movements:
[forums.dota-allstars.com]
I used it to play warcraft 3 inside a window. But it works with any window.
Note: you might have to alt-enter to put warhammer in a window. Then use the 'specify window' option in the program, and then alt-enter to restore it to fullscreen.

Try WinKey Killer: [www.majorgeeks.com] (googled the link, but I think that's what I used to use)

@Phoshi: LOL, I was having this very problem last night when playing KotOR 2... I was excited when I read about this program, but I'm even more excited that there's a way to do it with UltraMon. I didn't realize it had the capability to lock the mouse to the primary monitor using a hotkey, good stuff.

Does anyone know of a program that does the opposite of this? I use Media Center in Vista and when my projector is hooked to my laptop I put Media Center in that desktop, but when I maximize the window it captures my mouse and won't let my use it on my main monitor. I have to trick it by alt-tabbing then moving it to my monitor , and making sure I don't accidentally scroll back into Media Center.

@TheWeeJenny: I'm amazed nobody mentioned this earlier. I expected the first comment out of the gate to be "Hey (#*% you buddy! That's not a mouse!" ;-)
I couldn't find a good picture of "jailed" mouse, so I settled for any rodent lol.

This is a great idea, but it doesnt help the hit you take in fps by having the 2nd monitor on.

Hi, Great site, smart readers, useful info, keep up the good work. One complaint: that picture is not a mouse - it's a hamster.
