How To Watch Videos On Hulu From Anywhere
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on October 1, 2008
Hulu may carry lots of up-to-date US programming, but if you're sitting at a computer outside the States, you're locked out of the fun. The quick, straightforward video above details how to access Hulu videos from anywhere using previously mentioned Hotspot Shield to create a quick proxy that makes Hulu think you're browsing from the US. The video focuses on Hulu, but the method should work for pretty much any US-only site.

Been there done that ... and it doesn't work. It's too slow for video streaming.

Since the "update" of HOTSPOT SHIELD, the server is now located in London... so I can“t watch any US shows in HULU.com .
Can anyone please write another soft recommendation
Thanks!

Meh, I always wanted to be able to bypass the verification, but I really don't know about this...
Installing a program (and having it running everytime you want to watch a video on hulu) and having advertisement. I'm personally someone who don't like loading my computer with lots of random programs, and I think I'll stick with my surfthechannel + torrents.
Good tutorial though I guess.
Just out of curiosity, wouldn't there be a way to get the VLC out of it instead?

@wngchng87: have you tried BitComet to steal videos? Annoying as propertary as BitComet maybe the only reason I keep BitComet is to steal videos of the net... maybe you should give it a try?

According to reports, HotSpot Shield has a limit on bandwidth and will cut you off it you use too much. How about someone showing us how to setup a VERY SIMPLE proxy server. I have access to a US PC but I don't know how to setup a proxy server. I understand that a proxy server would solve the issue of "location".

One thing I have been looking for and ironically I cant view this video in any of my three browsers (even through a proxy site).
I will continue my quest by googling this 'hot spot shield' you speak of

It works in theory, but in reality it's too slow to watch anything (normally the speed is around 512 kbps) and you can't wait for hulu to buffer because it will only cache a small part to prevent stream ripping . Also it has a 5GB/month bandwidth limit, so not really a great solution.
There was a loophole a few weeks ago (proxying only the geo-check code with FoxyProxy) but they closed that quickly.

I might try this out. I know what Hulu is and me being from the U.K. have been looking for the easiest way to bypass their shields. The video makes it look like slicing a cake in half!

@dundermifflin - yes, if you have friends in the US who could setup a proxy, it would work. I think lifehacker should do as you suggested and show everyone how to set one up =]

The McAfee Site Advisor rates the Hotspot Shield site as yellow. The download apparently includes a dealio toolbar as well. Don't need no spyware :-(

@dundermifflin:
Define "access"
If you have ssh access, you could setup a ssh tunnel and proxy that way.
It works :)

@kerpalguy: Advertising-supported software pretty much *MUST* contain some form of spyware, or the advertisers have no idea how many PCs are running it. Ergo, while I don't trust McAfee's advice any more than I trust Zippy the Pinhead when it comes to PC security, I'd avoid Hotspot Shield anyway.

Funny. I just mentioned that I couldn't view Hulu from where I am in the video sites thread a few days ago and you folks already have an article about it! I'm full of warm fuzzies!
I also use Ubuntu pretty much exclusively, however, so no Hotspot Shield for me...
A proxy would do the trick, so if I'm ever REALLY jonesing for Hulu I'll figure out how to set one up.

It literally slows my internet connection to a crawl. I can appreciate what it's trying to do, but the connection it uses is so strained that it lengthens both video load times and ordinary page load times.

The 5GB limit per month is a MAJOR restriction. It is not a permanent solution to reaching Hulu.com.
In regards to Proxy, I tried EVERYTHING under the sun to trick Hulu with proxy including Tor and other methods... I couldn't get anything to trick Hulu into being from the U.S. I'm quite sure Hulu has advanced tactics at detecting known problematic proxies.

I tried WiTopia.Net (gives a VPN to the US) from Denmark and I can start the video but soon it becomes choppy due to low speed. WiTopia.Net has come up with a lot of suggestions but still I can't get Hulu.com to play without stopping to buffer every 3-4 seconds.

Quite sure AnchorFree appreciates the tip--now, they can block hulu.com and all of the freeloaders. HotSpotShield is not intended to be used as a proxy server for watching movies. So many inexpensive US based VPN services that I really question LH editorial motives--as in totally immature and naive.
On the LH plus side, they already have taught users, more than once, how to set up servers. In fact, the average person could have one running in about 15 minutes using XAMPP Portable. The question is who really wants to give away all of that bandwidth?
Or, if one is really desperate, just download FoxyProxy extension for Firefox; their site has all the information.

You do realize that this is illegal. The reason why hulu content is available in the US is because content providers have provided rights for online streaming only in the US territory.

I've from the UK and have a Zune, so I just tried this in the hope of being able to finally sign-up. Unfortunately, while it seems to work - "My country is United States
My city is Englewood" - Zune.net still tells me my area is not yet supported....

Wow, this is awesome! I searched the web for good US proxies, but none of them was fast enough for streaming video. Finally I can watch my "low-res-episodes" like Family Guy via streaming. But I will load my "premium episodes" via torrent with 720p. I hope not to many try this one out and streaming gets buffering :D
And I don't see any adverts in my Firefox...
Greetings from Germany!

Or you can use Witopia's VPN and get a US IP and an encrypted data channel for keeping your data secure and private in those public hotspots or at work. Yeah, you have to pay for it, but at least it doesn't display ads, slow down your connection by much or have bandwidth restrictions... and any program that crams your browser with advertisements, can't be trustworthy as your data is being collected by those shady "clients" that pay them to advertise.

I run Hotspot Shield on my Macbook Pro and it works great for quickly being able to access US content from Canada, including Hulu. Once installed, it's just one click and I'm good to go.

I downloaded Hotspot Shield and was able to access Hulu from Canada. However, I still can't access video on major American network sites. This, coupled with claims that Hotspot Shield has a bandwidth limit and it is just plain questionable make me think I'll remove this program just as quickly as I obtained it.

Proxies work for html, but the videos are flash and the verification is probably javascript. both of those can see your real IP only if the IPcheck is done server side (in php, asp or a simular language) web proxies work
