DIY iPhone Or iPod Touch Paper Clip Stand
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on October 1, 2008
Reader envador details how to make a sturdy iPhone or iPod touch stand out of a simple paper clip. Disappointed with the lack of support from methods like the previously mentioned business card stand or dollar bill stand, envador set out to make a stand that would stand up in the face of extreme jostling. The result is the simple and solid stand you see in the video. He was even so kind as to provide a PDF with measurements to help you build your own.

You know, my ipod touch came with a little plastic stand that does basically the exact same thing. Are you all just skipping over that? It works pretty well.

@happinessiseasy: That's not exactly insurmountable. Wrap a little tape around the point or something like that.

@happinessiseasy: Just tried it out, and I think any threat of scratching in minimal

I think this is a bad idea. It's going to scratch the shiny chrome too easily.

I'm going to try this on my regular mobile also (since I don't have an iPhone)
Very clever BTW

@thebigcheese: What little plastic stand are you talking about? The little plastic thing for swapping into the dock?

Awesome. It's a stand and a SIM removal tool. Very nice.

@Adam Pash: The touch comes with a small, clear-plastic stand that most people throw away because they don't know what it is. Not sure if the iPhone comes with one as well...

@happinessiseasy:
If you're worried about scratching it, you probably already have some protection in place. I use one of those InvisibleShield coverings. I don't think I could easily scratch my phone even intentionally with a paperclip.

Was trying to make one for my Touch Pro - mostly because I was surprised to see how long a paper clip is when it is unfolded. Almost didn't believe it to be true.
And sure enough, the paper clips I have are only half the size the clip in the video although they are larger than most paper clips in this part of the world. Anyway, just trying to add: Size does matter.

Perfect! I tried to invent something like this just yesterday with a paperclip and failed horribly. This design is far superior.
Pro-tip: use rubber coated paper clips if you're worried about scratches.

I like it! Now I wanna see someone design it so it folds up and fits in my pocket.

As a suggestion, you could also use a 5" wooden mini easel you'll get in an art supplies shop for around $2. Fits also the hPDA...

Hey everyone! Thanks for the friendly comments! I thought my idea was "cool" but didn't think it'd be so well-received. This really made my day!

Works great for me. I scotch taped the legs to my desk and put some white out on the tabs to stop scratches.

When I read this I just happened to be sitting at my desk at worki with a drawer full of paper clips. I did not have a pair of pliers but I made one by hand and it worked just great!
It sure beats the heck out of that 29.95 plastic stand I bought!

I prefer this solution : cheap, no scratches on the backside and funny :-) http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/12/92/08/24/playmo10.jpg http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/12/92/08/24/playmo11.jpg http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/12/92/08/24/playmo12.jpg

Sorry, I added the comment about using erasers on the stand. Just to clarify, I pushed the paperclip through the center of the eraser, longways, so that the eraser encircles the paperclip. They act as a rubber foot for the stand.
