MiniTube Syncs And Plays Music Videos With Your MP3s
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:03 AM on September 30, 2008

Windows (with iTunes, WinAmp, or KMPlayer): Free plug-in tool MiniTube hunts down music videos from Flash-based video sites and plays them along with your tunes. MiniTube's signature feature is the ability to play the video synced up to your local MP3—in other words, lip-synced to wherever you are in the song when the video starts playing. Its video accuracy depends, of course, on the accuracy of YouTube uploaders (and the video's copyright status), but you can tell MiniTube that a video is wrong and have it re-search, and it can be set to disappear when there's nothing to grab. Check out a video demonstration of MiniTube in action below.
MiniTube is a free download for Windows systems; requires iTunes, WinAmp, or the free KMPlayer to work. (Screenshot from SongReference.)

That autoplaying video is annoying me already. As is his voice.

Pretty amazing if this actually works. I was thinking of doing something similar, manually replacing the audio in music videos with mp3s, since the audio in compressed music videos usually terrible quality. However I realized that the audio tracks used in music videos are often not cut exactly the same way as the album versions, so they often won't sync up correctly. I wonder how they got around that.

While it is true that Autoplay = Fail, at least it was Radiohead. Right?

I just downloaded this and tried it on a few random songs. It doesn't seem to do anything all that revolutionary. It pretty much just searches youtube for the video that corresponds with your MP3, and plays it along at the same time. It doesn't do any kind of revolutionary automatic lip-syncing thing. It just starts the video when you start the song, in the hopes that they'll match up. And they rarely do.

This video autoplays in the Lifehacker RSS feed (through Google Reader).

@dr.vox: yeah, wtf was that? it was way down in my rss reader when it started playing and it freaked me the hell out.

I'm going to chime in with rest of the requests to not inline auto-play videos in the RSS feed. As mentioned, google's reader pre-loads several stories ahead and having the window just start talking to me without knowing which story is actually making the noise is obnoxious

@dr.vox: Agree.
Seriously....autoplay? Autoplay = spam.
Another vote to ban autoplay on Gizmodo.

@Rodriguez:
It wasn't at first though, was it? It was a mysterious Arabian accent that had somehow found his way into my feeds.

@glitch1138: @dr.vox: YES!!! Please stop the autoplay! It's annoying, I just want to skim my feeds, please!

@MobileMilitia: Scared the hell out of me too! My first paranoid, stupid thought was I'd been hacked... I am ashamed, but that voice of his caught me unawares!

VERY cool! I've thought about this idea before and pushed it out of my "cool ideas to do" list because I thought it would be a pain.
Good to see somebody did it for us. :)

Oh, and this looks like a cool feature if you happen to use either of those players. I especially like the feature to look up information about the song on Wiki, as I often do this myself (I've learnt a lot of interesting facts about some of my favourite artists and tracks like tis).

I agree that the autoplay feature would annoy me, except that it doesn't autoplay, I use Flashblock to prevent these kind of files from doing so, requiring me to specifically press play to allow the flash file to run.
However, for those that don't use this Firefox extension, I concur with the requests for the removal of the autoplay feature.

I agree - Please never put self-starting videos in the RSS feed again. Terribly annoying.

Really not happy with this auto-play. Keeps starting every time the page refreshes, and played in google reader when it was well off page. Please don't do that again!

Auto-playing video on a non-video-specific site is no good.

@dr.vox: Mysterious Arabian? Its an Indian accent.
I can't hear an Indian accent now without thinking about Fonejacker and Internet Service Providings...

gave it a shot - i'm not an ultra-lightweight app guy (iTunes is too big, but foobar is usually too small), but this was way too much. It didn't crush my system, but it was a functionality that I didn't need. I also couldn't get the sync to work...

Wow, I was opening like 20+ tabs from sites then all the sudden I head something over my music playing in the BG and I had to go through like 10 tab b4 I found it was this one - On top of that On MiniTubes main website the video DOES NOT auto start.... Why would LH autostart it?
