IBM iNotes Ultralite Brings Lotus Access To iPhones
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:00 PM on September 30, 2008
iPhone/iPod touch users whose offices rely on Lotus Notes for email, calendar, and contacts can now access their information through a customised Safari Mobile interface created by IBM. CNET reports that IBM and Apple are working on a full-fledged Lotus Notes Traveler app or interface for true push access, but in the meantime, iNotes looks like a pretty graceful way to fit your Apple phone into an IBM network. Your network administrator needs to have installed Lotus Domino Web Access 8.0.2 to grant you iNotes access; Notes users who've tried out this webapp, let us know what you think in the comments.

@Jimmy M: Sorry - that sounded weird. v1.1 INCLUDES Email, Contacts and ToDo's and is currently with Apple for approval

No love for NotesCal, Lifehacker?

As soon as Apple approves v1.1, I'll be releasing NotesPro which includes Email, Contacts and ToDo's.
Take that, IBM :)

Alas, finally something positive comes from the evil that is Lotus Notes. I cannot stand the look and feel of Notes but it is what my company uses. (sigh)

@cfohlin: My company (large automaker, goes by two initials) takes years to move onto new versions of software, so I'm in IT lockdown with Notes 6.5!

Finally a justification for my org to spring for an iphone for me :)

Finally, the most reliable enterprise mail system back end, gets a nice iPhone front end. Sweet.

@shoverbj: What version of Notes are you using at work? Notes 8 is much improved over 7.

I'm also trapped in Lotus Notes user hell in my day job as a Corporate Whoreâ„¢.
A little more development and maybe we can persuade the powers that be to ditch our standard issue blackberries for shiny iphone goodness.

Been running it on v8 here for a while. Certainly makes the life easier for the user(s) not firmly planted at a desk. I still giggle at the typos though. That keyboard sure takes some getting used to for the lot.
And yes, Notes has come a LONG way with v8.x
Proud Notes fanboy :)

Ok, maybe I am just not seeing it, but is there a link that allows you to try this out? Or does it have to be installed on your company's notes server first? I am dying to have a real notes client for my iphone!

@ben: right there with ya. I "ehat" Lotus Notes, and we're still stuck on 6.5 as well. It takes an act of Congress to get software upgraded at my company and, considering the current bailout issues, it's equally as effective. It'd be nice to not have to forward work emails to a private domain email account and then access that account through the iPhone. Yuck.

@DaiWalka: Yeah feeling your pain... a lot of organisations seem to be stuck in an endless loop of:
Notes sucks, so we'll use something else one day.
We won't upgrade Notes because we are going to use something else one day.
We can't be bothered to use something else.
An amusing side note - I tried to write a Notes agent that would forward my email to GMail and preserve the original headers, but managed to basically resend everything in my "Sent" folder going back to 2004. EPIC FAIL.

@tmorriso: this is a server side component that your domino administrator will have to install. there's some talk of a true notes client for the iphone (similar to notes traveller which works with windows mobile). as the iphone matures, i'm confident that we'll see better domino integration in the future.

@shoverbj: Ditto, my company uses it too. Unfortunately its a point release off, and I don't see them upgrading anytime soon to appease some iPhone users. This would come in handy though.

@bmarko: Instead we should use? Exchange? Oh yea, real secure, real stable. Web mail like Sarah Palin? Oh yea.

@MattHall: I would suggest that you find someone that knows what they are doing then. Webmail is real secure, ask Sarah Palin. You should be fired for even trying.

I too am in the Lotus Notes gulag at work. Anyone know of a Notes WinMo client to respect?

@DaiWalka:
I created a forwarding agent in Notes and my company sent me an email saying they found the agent and had deleted it because it violated some policy of theirs.

I still don't understand why everyone hates Notes so much.

Looks cleaner and easier to use than Notes itself. However, if it's a true IBM product, it'll consume 1/3 of the iPhone's resources.

Looks great for the LN user but I think I'm still screwed. We have to VPN in along with a hard token to access our Lotus Notes and I don't think the iphone's embedded VPN takes care of that. Anyone else know anything about VPN and iphone?
