How To Use Custom Windows Visual Styles
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 9:00 PM on September 30, 2008

Customising the appearance of your Windows installation can be frustrating, because both Windows XP and Vista are limited to the Microsoft's default themes out of the box. However, with a bit of tweaking under the hood, your Windows setup can try on a wider range of looks than come pre-installed. Let's take a look at how to patch your Windows installation to allow customised styles, and a few places to find new and interesting styles online.
Vocabulary and Methods
When talking about the physical appearance of Windows there are two terms that are distinct but often used incorrectly in place of each other. Visual styles, which have the .msstyles file extension, are the files which supp;y all the information about how the interfaces within Windows should look. The toolbar skin, start button skin, borders, buttons, etc. are all stored in the visual style. Themes contain a visual style along with additional settings such as icons, wallpaper, etc. Later, when browsing for goodies, keep in mind that a theme pack will have further customisation than a visual style pack.
Throughout the tutorial you'll need to be able to access the menu within Windows where you can change your themes and visual styles. The following screenshots are from Windows XP but the essential menus are nearly identical in function in Vista, too. For reference, here is how to access both:
XP: Right-click Desktop -> Properties -> Themes Tab (or Appearance Tab for Styles)
Vista: Right-click Desktop - > Personalise -> Themes
First, back up your current theme for safe keeping

Although you'll most likely find a new style that you really enjoy, on the off chance that you don't, make a backup of your current theme for you to restore later if necessary. Backing up only takes a moment and will allow you put things back exactly as they were before you started customising, right down to the wallpaper. From within the Themes tab click Save As and name your theme whatever you'd like. Save it in a safe place.
Second, patch your Windows install
Patching your system for themes allows you to use non-Microsoft approved visual styles. At the very root you're simply replacing the Uxtheme.dll with a modified version that doesn't verify if the style has been signed by Microsoft. It used to be that patching your Windows installation was a hassle, a small one, but a hassle nonetheless. Now both Windows XP and Vista have patching programs available that make it no more hassle than clicking a button and rebooting. There are various programs that can do what the free patches do with some additional functionality thrown in, but they are hardly worth the $20 and up fees they command.
For Windows XP, download the Uxtheme Multi-Patcher. Run the file, click through the prompts and reboot.

For Windows Vista, download VistaGlazz. Run the file, click through the prompts and reboot.

Both patching programs will allow you to reverse the process should anything go wrong by simply running the program again. (However, I've been patching Windows installs for years without a hitch.)
Finally, download and install custom, third party styles
The best way to verify if your patch job has been successful is to browse some of the great repositories of visual styles and select a few to try out. Below are some samples of the most popular styles at DeviantArt.com. Before you begin downloading through, a quick overview of where the files go is in order.
If a style pack is zipped up properly then installing it is as simple as unzipping the files into the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes directory. Check when you open the zip file if the files have nested directories. If you install a visual style or theme and something is amiss, check the following list to ensure the files ended up in the right place:
.Themefiles must be in the/Themes/folder, not within any subfolders..MSStylesfiles must be in their own sub-folders. If the style name isNewStyle.msstyles, then sub folder in/Themes/must be/Themes/NewStyle/- If your style pack came with a
shellstyle.dll, that also goes within its own subfolder, i.e./Themes/NewStyle/shell/- If you have any problem with loading a style or theme, go back and double check for spelling and capitalisation. The names are case sensitive. If a file has a combination of upper and lower case letters, the folder name you place it in must be spelled exactly the same.
Now let's take a look at some popular third-party visual styles in action.

I use a program called StyleSelector (google styleselector for vista). It enables me to change the system font and size as well as select themes without any patching. It creates a folder called "Styles" where you put your Vista styles and changing them is as easy as selecting and clicking apply.
Works perfect for me

Anyone using the beta that can comment on it's reliability?

I had nothing but issues with Vistaglazz on SP1 vista. Complete and utter nightmare. I will use default themes if It means avoiding such a fiasco again. My theme reverted to classic (horrible) and refused to change. There seemed to be registry files missing, screen turned a shade of red, desktop background couldn't be changed etc.etc.etc. I fixed it all with a system restore point, but NEVER again.

You should mention that the latest stable VistaGlazz 1.0 is known to cause problems on Vista SP1 systems. The developer even warns not to use this version to patch a SP1 installation.
I tried it once on XP some time ago, and it killed my whole system... so you better warn the LH users.

Don't forget to tell people that Vista Glazz doesn't work on the 64-bit Vista SP1. I ruined my Vista 64 install and had to start over -- they had no work around for the problem it caused. Direct from the website:

I've always wondered why we have to still hack the uxtheme dll and why Microsoft hasn't just opened it up altogether. Here they've created the ability to have custom styles, but locked it down to only signed ones - how many official Microsoft sanctioned themes other than the included ones are out there? XP is almost EOL'ed, and how many official third party themes have been released?
Meanwhile there's a whole community dedicated to hacking uxtheme and providing good themes and styles. What gives?

By luck, I had just asked a question on the "ask-your-fellow-readers-anything" thread. I tried a few things, but they didn't work, so I'll try it here:
I recently used NLite to slim down windows XP for my laptop. I removed the Luna theme and used Windows classic to help speed it up a little. I got to wanting a little eye candy, so I decided to make a separate account that I would use when I wanted to play around and make it pretty. I patched my xtheme.dll so I could use 3rd party themes. When I tried installing a few, none of them worked. Did NLite take something out that made those themes work? Another poster suggested start>run>services.msc and look for the Themes service to make sure that it was enabled. The theme service was turned on, but still no luck. The luna theme is still in the theme folder, just can't see it in the theme selector.

@LesPaulLvr5: Wou actually don't need to put the .msstyle in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes. You can put it anywhere, I think, probably a good idea to keep in a folder you have read/write access to. The catch is that the style won't show up in the "Windows and Buttons" list in the "Appearance" tab of the "Display properties". No big deal though - just double click on the .msstyles file and save the theme in the Themes tab of "Display Properties".

@pnikkosis: Hmm I think it's really a matter of personal preferences...
I really like this style! The windows look a lot like the classic windows theme, but then better. I also like the blue taskbar, it's nice and calm.
BTW, I'm using the "Plastic" color sceme, which can be seen in the display properties window on the screenshow at deviantart. Looks a lot better than the standard one.
But you can think it sucks, no problem. There are a lot of themes around that I really do not like which other people do like. For example, I do not like either of the three themes posted above. Luna is way to plastic and large, looks to much like the windows xp theme. Sentinel is the worst of all, looks fake and chaotic to me. The best of the three is prestine, although I do not like the way the letters in an inactive window look like. You can hardly read them anymore! But that's just A small minor.. I could use that one, but I prefer the theme I posted before. Although not with the wallpaper that comes with it - that one is aweful!

I am incredibly, amazingly, excitedly, scientifically, amazed. The tutorial itself was a little light but I still figured it out. Now, my theme is intense! Off of DeviantArt, I downloaded the NeoGenIx theme [dobee.deviantart.com] Follow that link and if it doesn't work, go to the DeviantArt home page and and search NeoGenIx. The one I used was the 12th one from top of the list. Don't forget that you have to install Style XP in order for most of these to work. Just Google the name and when you get to the TGTSoft download page, choose the fourth and last one down that is not a free trial version. Combining these two programs surely has brightened my month and could easily brighten yours.

So with WindowBlinds, do you set Windows to "Basic" instead of "Aero"? I'd hate to give all the cycles and memory for both as surely WindowBlinds handles what Aero does?

@jccarr117: I'm not the right person to advise you because i don't own a mac but the ones i know are:
skinning > ShapeShifter US $20.00 but skins everything (however it seems that OS X 10.5.x is currently not supported).
creating/editing > ThemePark free
themes > check Stefanks's Deviantart Gallery
and here
on Windows for my minimalistic tastes i only use:
areao4.2 by *heylove which you can see here
(it's the 1st one listed)

@Redeemer3: I'm surprised, too, but you have to take into the account that Lifehacker was always about getting your OS and programs running fast and smoothly and showing you all the shortcuts and tricks that power-users like to use with no focus on eye candy at all. Seems they're running out of the former, so they focus more frequently now on the latter.
Also, if you only address tech and power users you're missing out on a huge audience that doesn't share those interests, but wants their computers all shiny and blinged out no matter what. If Lifehacker wants to explain to them how to do it in an easier-to-grasp way than some other websites do, more power to them (though I prefer tech and power-user articles myself). Maybe that's how the power users of tomorrow are born - by starting out with the simpler posts on Lifehacker today. :)

well for starters on making your own theme, you can copy one of the themes your not using and use 'resource hacker' to edit the images and information. remember the color ff00ff is transparent. windowsblinds is not legally free however there is an alternative that doesnt require messing with system files and risking your system. its called styler, when you get a theme just drag and drop the zip/rar file to the theme window where the theme list is. once its installed right click for more options on it and go about your mary way. styler also works perfectly with windows xp with no service packs. NOTE: do not download themes that have installers, you dont need installers and they often come with 'packaged software' resource hacker: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ styler: http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.id.551-styler-1-401.html

For those of you wishing to re-skin your XP installation from an IT-Lockdown situation, I've managed to replace the uxtheme.dll once by booting to Safe Mode, and once when that didn't work, by booting to a USB-stick riding Linux distro that had the power to read/write NTFS/FAT32/Whatever Windows Filesystem It Was.
Admittedly, the latter method is kind of extreme if you don't carry such a thing around with you all the time - but I seriously hate that default blue XP style.

@the_boffin: Ah, that sounds like one of the things I *used* to love about Ubuntu.
Now that I've moved up to Hardy, I can't change themes. No reason why, as far as my vaguely linux-inexperienced eyes can tell, clicking the buttons simply has no effect.
Not only that, when I switch on "desktop effects/Compiz-Fusion" so that I can work with my desktop in a more intuitive fashion, the way I've gotten used to... The screen randomly crashes out into a black/white/grey fuzz, and doesn't come back unless I hardware reboot.
I still use my Ubuntu. But it doesn't *always* "just do it", unfortunately - and to be honest, I put it down to my lack of experience, but it's proving much harder to rectify the problem than most of the issues I get with XP :-(
Whoa. Random tangent there.

I already used this method and I agree it's one of the best. But one concern I would want to raise is about the site Themexp.org
According to McAfee Site Advisor its rated red because of 2957 red downloads out of 3128 downloads. Even when I clicked a preview of an image it required downloading a file named 78.exe
Here is McAfee Site Advisor link.
