Control Remember The Milk From Ubiquity
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:30 PM on September 29, 2008
Firefox with Ubiquity: Command-line quickness and universal task managers go together like milk and ultra-organised cookies. Developer Gary Hodgson realised this and created a super-useful interface for universal to-do manager Remember the Milk inside Ubiquity, the natural language, terminal-style extension that we've taken a shine to. The command plug-in allows registered RTM users to log in and out, add and complete tasks with suggested auto-completions, and offers visual cues when tasks are seriously overdue or high-priority. RTM for Ubiquity is a free download; Firefox users with Ubiquity installed can install the command by visiting the link below (and approving third-party installation).

I had a significant performance hit on firefox from Ubiquity, especially on start up time. Was anyone else forced to uninstall because of this?

I use many Ubiquity command but the RTM app never attracted me. But this looks like a killer in tasks organization...
I might create a rtm account...

@jkremer3: I too have performances problem with Ubiquity... It was worst when I had FireFM installed on the same profile...
I still use Ubiquity because it's worthy even considering the restart ("restart" command...) that has to occur every now and then.

@holdemm: If you've got the Ubiquity extension installed, just click the link to [tinyurl.com] and click 'Subscribe' at upper right corner of the page. It'll open up a warning page asking you if you're sure you want to install the script. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and confirm, and that's it, it's ready to use.
Although I've been having some trouble getting it up and running keep getting an error:
"An exception occurred while loading code. TypeError: redeclaration of var API_KEY"

@holdemm: If you have Ubiquity installed (get it here), there should be a bar at the top of the page asking you if you want to install.

Sounds interesting.
I'll stick to Task2Gather ([task2gather.com]) though.

I didn't realise you could create custom commands for Ubiquity. Whilst this one is arguably of less use to me because I have the RTM widget in Netvibes (which remains permanently open on a tab in Firefox), there's no question others could be useful. For one thing I'd love to change the locations of the Gmaps and Amazon searches to be the UK, as at present they're US-based and therefore not much use to me...

I love to read this. I hope this will become prevalent way to dealing with applications on the internet.

Maybe this is a bit paranoid, but I'm weary of giving this unofficial/untested extension access to my browser. In theory it could steal saved passwords from firefox...
But I do like the idea of this Ubiquity command, I just want it to be tested first.

I love Ubiquity, I just created a command for creating a URL of any selected text at shorttext.com. So select any text and issue Ubiquity command - 'shorttext this' .... or if you see any shorttext URL, select it and type 'longtext this' and it will replace the URL with the full text.
If you have Ubiquity installed, just head over to [shorttext.com] to install the 2 commands.

I'm having problems using the application, simply because it doesn't update the task list after adding a new task.
This way, I would have to restart my firefox to complete a task I just added via Ubiquity.
Very annoying. :|

Thanks for the mention guys, I hope that the command will prove to be useful. Development is ongoing as I want to add a few more features, and if anyone has problems please let me know and I will see what I can do. I'll ping the guys who experienced problems above to find out the details of what went wrong.
portobello_man, if it's useful for you, I have modified version of the Amazon command, which allows you to perform a blended search (i.e. not just books) and also specify which store to search in (.co.uk .de .jp .ca and .com), because I wanted to search the UK store, but live in Germany. It currently defaults to the UK store. [garyhodgson.com]
Cheers!

@Turbotoast: That is indeed annoying, and so I have just updated the command (v0.2.3) with a fix for this. If anyone has issues please let me know. Thanks.
