DIY Hydroponics On the Cheap
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on September 26, 2008
DIY web site Instructables has a detailed step-by-step tutorial for setting up your own hydroponics system on a budget with recycled materials. All you'll need to get started is a few 2 litre bottles, tubing, an aquarium pump, and a few other odds and ends—most of which you can find around the house or at your local gardening store. When you're finished, you've got a completely automated hydroponics system that regularly pumps nutrient-filled water to your plants. The final project isn't terribly pretty (it's probably best suited to your garage), but judging by the video in the last step, it appears to work really well. If you're an old hand with with hydroponics, share your experience in the comments.

@fogmaster: It may be shameless, but for someone seriously interested in hydro growing, your plug is infinitely more useful than the trailer park setup shown above. Seriously, why bother with hydro if you aren't going to get a good light setup? And considering how much lights cost, why not spend a little more and get a hydro system that doesn't look like a MacGyver smoker built it in their high school shop class? I may be wrong on this, but I've tried cutting corners when growing in the past and it never ends well.

I'd like to give a shamless plug to [forums.fogponics.com] we are a hydroponics website but we have PLENTY of user created tutorials on everything from Aeroponics, to the more advanced Fogponics... even a little bit of old fashioned hydroponics too!
This setup is the most basic of all the hydroponic methods, it is known as a wick system and really doesnt require a pump at all.
If you are looking for something more advanced, check into DWC (deep water culture) or even bubblers.
If that doesnt suit you, check out Ebb and Flow.

I dont think showing a photo of "lucky bamboo" (an indoor plant at that), which is about to die, a good way to show that this works. But thats just me.

@pinkskittles: Its for cluttering your garage with dying plants shoved into an ugly jumble of plastic and wood. Especially good for making your wife leave the car in the driveway.

@ThickSkinned: Thanks! Generally speaking, you can make a setup yourself just as good as production models, HOWEVER, you must take into account the materials you are using, are they going to react to the nutrients?
also, it may take much more time than expected to build your own home made hydro system. Trial and error :P
oh and the sun is much better than any light you can buy in the store.

"Best suited for your garage..."
...right. Because using a hydroponic kit like this for whatever it is a lot of people might be using it for is probably best kept out of plain sight.
I see the innocence of this project, but I can't overlook the fact that a hydroponic kit kept in the garage is probably not for bamboo.
Now we just need a tutorial teaching us how to organically light said garage and we're in business!

@actionscripted: cut a hole in the ceiling... install 8" ducting and run that straight into your grow box or what have you...

@fogmaster: Agreed, you have a useful site. I was thinking of getting something going in my garage to continue my small garden running through the winter. Your site has a lot of great tips. I probably won't have enough time to implement a good setup this year, but I'll have enough info to be successful next year. Thanks.

Dude I don't know what your smoking but that's definitely not a wick system. A wick system has a "wick" that has one end in the plant another in the solution. The nutrients then move up the wick as it dries out and move into the plant. its the most low-tech system around. If I had to categorize the above I would call it a super cheap ebb and flow system. nutrients flow into the 2 liters via the pump and then drain out. Hence the "flood and drain" in the title.
For those interested do a google search for DWC (deep water culture) definitely the way to go for discretion and budget. PS... this doesnt include any grow lights so unless you plan on keeping your plants in the window, the cost of this setup will easily triple...

Wow. I'll be the only person in my neighborhood using hydroponics for something legal. This is probably not great for the garage if the garage in question is similar to mine: 9x16 containing a VW Golf, camping equipment, a water heater, and a single tiny window near the ceiling. With the addition of a tray to catch any spills, I can't see why this wouldn't work well enough in a guest bedroom that gets plenty of morning sunlight, though. Any thoughts on methods of incorporating mineral supplements into the system?
