Cool Timer Helps You Stay On Task
Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 12:30 AM on September 26, 2008
Windows only: Stop wondering where the time went and start using a timer to be more productive. Cool Timer is a small timer application with three modes: countdown, stopwatch and alarm clock. You can customise the colour scheme and size of the clock to make it easier to see it at a distance, and you can assign a text message to an alarm to serve as a reminder. Included are several basic sound files like a gong, alarm clock, etc. but you can use any WAV, MP3 or MIDI file you want. If you use certain countdown times and alarms frequently, you can save them for repeat use. Cool Timer is a free download for Windows only.

I used this application during tests and quizzes for my math students. It helped that I would load a popular song because they would instantly drop their pencils to start dancing. I never had to say "Okay, class. Pencils down."!!

I too use it in class, kids love the extra large size which is immense once projected on the whiteboard. Could do with prettying up a bit, looking a bit dated now, some curves and gradients would be nice, but still simple and effective.

use it too in science lessons for a couple of years, nothing beats having a big countdown clock to keep the pace of a lesson.

I *constantly* use a timer. The one I use is free with a tiny footprint. Timer1.3 - I use it in conjunction with Launchy (though you can use it stand-alone as well). The plugin developer is very accessible and amenable to adding in features users are interested in: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=2089292&forum_id=766269

@HolbrookBaucis: That's a fantastic little timer. I've been looking for one that works from the command line for ages, and it hardly took me any time to set up with Find and Run Robot too.

I prefer the Generic Countdown Timer Yahoo! widget myself. A lot less ugly, albeit with only a countdown feature. That's the only useful feature for me when I'm creating self-imposed deadlines anyway.

Dude, I would totally use this if a TSA security person asked me to boot up my laptop.
I would start of this, and say something in pseudo-Arabic, and then scream "PRAISE BE UNTO ALLAH!!!"
Ya think he'd get mad at me?
(btw I'm totally joking)

Awesome! I was actually looking for a stopwatch, and now I can just use this. I'm going to use it to spend less time on the computer. I'm going to average out how much time I spend on the computer on an average day, and then reduce it by 5 mins every day or something like that.

Looks interesting.. I would like to know if it helps me become more productive at work. I think I'll try it. Besides, if it doesn't work, I can always "praise Allah". :)

I've been looking for something like this to use while weightlifting. I'll give it a try tonight.

This app is full of spayware/malware/adware. I was looking for something like this and went to the page and McAfee has it as a red site, and it looks like it is for good reason: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/harmonyhollow.net/downloads/8330841/

I'm not a fan of downloading software, so I prefer this site: http://www.online-stopwatch.com/ It's simple and does the job.

My favorite timer is a small javascript app that displays the remaining time in in the title bar of Firefox. http://theinsomniacsociety.com/timer.html?minutes=%s&alertme=1 I added the %s in the URL so that I could type "timer 15" in the address bar and automatically start a 15 minute countdown. Pop-up alert optional.

Tempis Fugit! I'll give it a spin, but have used Slimtimer (www.slimtimer.com) for several years both professionally or personally and LOVE IT. I use my IPod Touch as stop-watch/countdown timer - so this might be a great add on. Thanks!

I wrote a little program called BuddhaBell - a meditation timer primarily - but it can ring daily/weekly alarms, play chimes on the hour, etc... - and you can load your own sound files to be played when the timer is up. Mine tells me "time to pick up the kids!" M-F at 2:50pm!

At my workplace, harmonyhollow.net is blocked by SmartFilter as spyware. No idea why.

Any more detail on this company? McAfee Site Advisor blocks the URL saying "When we browsed this site, it made unauthorized changes to our test PC."
